The French town of Bourg de Megrin was founded at St David’s Point by 1735 at the latest and now lies in ruins. This historical trace offers a way into St David, where heritage, landscapes and artisan-made products can be discovered in different ways.
Coast, Wetlands and Gardens
La Sagesse comprises a mangrove estuary, a salt pond and three beaches, as well as geological formations, coral reefs, coastal forests and thorny cactus woodland. These varied landscape features are accompanied by another distinctive aspect of the area: La Sagesse provides a habitat for migratory and water birds.
Petit Bacaye also combines coastal scenery and natural heritage, but in a different way. This secluded beach, with grey sand and coconut palms, lies on the coast in the southeastern parish of Saint David. Historical Carib/Kalinago carbets or villages are also located near Petit Bacaye.
Palm Tree Gardens is in Laura. The two-acre garden has more than 300 plant species, including 40 palm species. Other garden features include a lily pond with large pink and green lotus flowers, as well as red-footed tortoises. Guided tours of the well-kept gardens last about 45 minutes. St David thus brings together two distinct aspects of nature: habitats such as La Sagesse’s mangrove estuary and the diversity of a botanical garden.
Historical Traces and Culture
La Sagesse is one of the sites in the parish of Saint David with Amerindian archaeological remains. The area’s cultural heritage therefore extends beyond the ruins of Bourg de Megrin to include traces along the coast. Historical Carib/Kalinago carbets or villages are located near Petit Bacaye.
Another cultural tradition is the St David’s Day Celebration. Since 1987, the St David’s Day Planning Committee has organized the celebration to showcase the natural beauty and culture of the rural parish of Saint David. Together with the historical sites, it shows that the area’s history is expressed both in specific archaeological sites and in a cultural event.
Rum and Spices
Westerhall Estate is a rum distillery in Westerhall, in the parish of Saint David, and preserves the history of fine rum production. A distillery tour offers a look at the rum-making process and also includes a tasting of various rums from the Westerhall portfolio. The parish’s rum tradition also has an agricultural side: sugar cane is grown for rum production in one of the few remaining areas.
Laura’s Herb & Spice Garden is in Perdmontemps, Saint David. The garden offers a guided tour along a path paved with nutmeg shells. The hands-on spice experience includes cinnamon, ginger, allspice, chadon beni and nutmeg, which visitors are welcome to touch and smell. Here, the tour and close encounter with the spices take center stage; the approximately 45-minute visit to Palm Tree Gardens refers instead to its garden tour.
Bayleaf is based in St. David’s, Grenada, and produces artisan herbal teas from hand-picked, naturally dried leaves. Together with the spice garden and rum production, this shows different ways of working with plants and agricultural products. Whether you are interested in historical sites, natural and garden landscapes, or first-hand insight into rum and spice traditions, St David has something to offer.
