Kastoria combines Lake Orestiada with a rich urban history: mansions, museums and an annual custom each offer a different focus. The city is built amphitheatrically on a strip of land enclosed by Lake Orestiada. The landscape and the city’s built heritage therefore offer two tangible ways to explore the area—from views of the lake to historic collections and buildings.
Lake, cave and paths
Lake Kastoria has been designated a natural monument of exceptional beauty by the Greek Ministry of Culture and included in the European Natura 2000 network for environmental protection. The paths on the short circular route around the lake pass plane trees, old mansions and churches; along the way, they offer views across the calm water. This gives the lake not only scenic significance but also protected status.
The excursion boat “ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ” offers another perspective, with a leisurely trip around the Kastoria peninsula. Along the way, there are views of the Dragon’s Cave, the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa and the city’s mansions. If you plan to take the trip, check the boat’s current timetable in advance.
The Dragon’s Cave has a 300-metre visitor route through ten chambers and seven small freshwater lakes. The cave formations include stalactites and stalagmites; there are also palaeontological finds, including cave bear bones approximately 10,000 years old. The tour thus brings together several aspects of the cave: its chambers and lakes, as well as traces of a distant past.
Mansions and architecture
The traditional Papaterpou Mansion on Kastoria’s lakeside road, Megalou Alexandrou Street, dates to 1880. Another architectural feature is the Tsatsiapa Mansion in the Apozari district. Built in 1754, it is the city’s only surviving three-storey mansion with a rectangular floor plan and a pronounced horizontal axis. The description of this axis refers to the horizontal orientation of the building; together with the floor plan, it makes for a clearly identifiable feature of its form.
Museums in historic houses
In the traditional Doltso district, the Folklore Museum of Kastoria is housed in the Nerantzi Aivazi Mansion. It offers an insight into the life of an aristocratic family from Kastoria. Also in Doltso, the Costume Museum is housed in the Emmanuel Brothers’ Mansion. Its collection includes authentic costumes from across Greece, including elaborately crafted costumes from Kastoria. The two houses offer different perspectives: one focuses on the life of a family, the other on clothing and regional costumes.
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle displays possessions left by descendants of the Macedonian fighters, uniforms and photographs from the early and peak periods of the Macedonian Struggle. The collection also includes historical maps; the oldest dates from 1550. Personal and military objects are thus presented alongside images and maps as different forms of historical record.
Another historic building is the Kourshoum Mosque. It is the only one of Kastoria’s seven Ottoman mosques still standing today. Experts believe it was built in the early 15th century on the foundations of an older Byzantine church. This date remains an assumption and should be distinguished from the confirmed information about the surviving mosque.
January dates and nearby attractions
The Kastorian Ragoutsaria custom takes place in Kastoria every year on January 6, 7 and 8. Anyone planning their trip around the festival can therefore keep a clear annual timeframe in mind. Architecture, museums and lakeside routes offer other themes to focus on when planning.
Nearby is the Dispilio Open-Air Museum on the southern shore of Lake Kastoria, about 7 km from the city of Kastoria. It reconstructs a Neolithic lakeside village as it might have looked approximately 7,500 years ago. The approximate timeframe and cautious wording are part of how the reconstruction is presented.
When looking for hotels in Kastoria, the reason for your trip can be the deciding factor: those who want to experience Ragoutsaria can plan around January 6, 7 and 8; those focusing on architectural history, collections or the lake can choose other themes.
