Archea Pissa can be understood through a specific race route and the broader cultural context of the Municipality of Ancient Olympia. In 2023, the 5 km “Δρόμος του Κλεοσθένη” run led from the Church of Agia Kyriaki in Archaia Pissa to the Grove of the Olympic Truce near the entrance to the archaeological site of Archaia Olympia. At the municipal level, several museums and the International Olympic Academy provide additional cultural points of reference.

A route with named landmarks

In 2023, runners started at the Church of Agia Kyriaki in Archaia Pissa. They passed the tombs of the Hellanodikai, entered the grounds of the International Olympic Academy, and ran above the ancient Stadium of Olympia. The finish was in the Grove of the Olympic Truce, just before the entrance to the archaeological site of Archaia Olympia. The five kilometres indicate the length of the run; the landmarks also show which named places the route connected.

Two editions, different focuses

The 2023 edition honoured Kleisthenes, king of Ancient Pissa. In 2026, the symbolic Truce Run “Δρόμος του Κλεισθένη” took place from Archaia Pissa to Archaia Olympia. It aimed to convey Olympic values, and especially the message of the Olympic Truce. This edition was organised jointly by Sympoliteia Olympia, the Supreme Council for Sport of the Armed Forces, the Municipality of Ancient Olympia, and the local community of Archaia Pissa.

On this occasion, young priestesses at the grounds of the International Olympic Academy in Archaia Olympia welcomed the personnel of the “Ηνίοχος 2026” aviation exercise, as well as family members who had completed the Truce Run. The years mark different focuses: in 2023, the run honoured Kleisthenes; in 2026, it focused on conveying Olympic values and the message of the Olympic Truce. The International Olympic Academy was a stop on the route in 2023 and served as the reception venue in 2026.

Cultural sites at the municipal level

The Municipality of Ancient Olympia is home to an archaeological site, the Archaeological Museum, the International Olympic Academy, a thematic Archaeological Museum of the Olympic Games, a Museum of the History of Excavations, and a Museum of the Modern Olympic Games. The municipality describes these institutions collectively as the reason for the large number of visitors and the international interest.

The institutions’ names offer different cultural and historical perspectives. The archaeological site, Archaeological Museum, and Museum of the History of Excavations provide archaeological context.
