Mesolongion offers different ways to explore its history and surroundings: the Municipal Art Gallery focuses on art and the city’s history, the Trikoupis Family Museum on a furnished 19th-century urban residence, and the Salt Museum on the history of salt. These are complemented by the Garden of Heroes as a historic site and the lagoon as part of a Ramsar-protected wetland complex. This range helps you choose a focus for your stay: collections, salt history, a memorial site or the landscape.
Museums: Living spaces, art and city history
On the first floor of the Trikoupis Family Museum, rooms such as bedrooms, dining rooms and offices are furnished as a 19th-century urban residence. Portraits, furniture and objects belonging to the Trikoupis family furnish the rooms. The display therefore includes both private and work-related spaces and offers a glimpse into the design of an urban residence of that era. The focus is not on a single exhibit, but on the interplay between the rooms and the family’s belongings.
The Municipal Art Gallery takes a different approach. Its collection includes original paintings and copies depicting scenes from the Exodus of Mesolongi, as well as portraits of Philhellenes and Greek military leaders. It also features original engravings by the Englishman Friedel from 1837, weapons from 1826, and coins and medals. Different types of objects are thus presented side by side: paintings and portraits, prints, weapons and minted objects. The dates of the engravings and weapons provide different points of reference in time.
The ground floor of the gallery is devoted to Lord Byron. On display are personal belongings, manuscripts and artworks connected to his presence in Greece and Mesolongi. These include the original poem “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage,” copies of important paintings and a model of the poet’s monument. Personal objects, texts and depictions offer a perspective on history centered on Byron. The final gallery, by contrast, focuses on the history of the Holy City of Mesolongi. Traditional memorabilia, weapons belonging to freedom fighters, engravings, maps, coins and traditional costumes are on display.
Exhibitions may change. If particular objects are important to your plans, check which displays are currently on view before your visit.
Salt history and wetlands
The Salt Museum presents the history of salt and displays different types, colors and forms of salt. It also covers cultivation and production methods at the old and new saltworks of Mesolongi. The exhibition topic therefore includes both the material itself and the methods used to extract it. This focus differs from the museums’ family- and city-history collections and complements them with the history of salt.
The landscape offers another thematic perspective. The Mesolongi–Aitoliko lagoon, together with the deltas of the Acheloos and Evinos rivers, forms a Ramsar-protected wetland complex. The protected area thus includes not only the lagoon but also the two river deltas. If you would like to explore Mesolongion from a nature-focused perspective, the lagoon can be understood as part of this named complex.
The Garden of Heroes
The Garden of Heroes is located at the northern entrance to the Holy City of Mesolongi and covers almost 14 stremmata. During the struggle for independence, it served as a burial ground for fighters from the city’s garrison. The idea for its creation came from Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece’s first governor. Its former function and the idea for its creation associated with Kapodistrias provide different historical connections: the burial ground relates to the history of the fighters, while the initiative relates to the garden’s origins.
