Lófos (Vrosthena) is a mountain village at an altitude of 800 metres. In the centre stands the large tower “το αρχοντικό του πασά”; local traditions and a festival scheduled for a specific date add to its character. If you are looking for holiday apartments in Lofos, the village’s mountain setting, history and local connections can provide an initial framework for choosing your destination. Consider which of these themes matter most for your trip.

Tower, village church and nearby chapel

The tower “το αρχοντικό του πασά” stands in the centre of Lófos. Its building history includes a tradition that is explicitly uncertain: it was probably begun by the Venetians and completed by the Turks. The village church is dedicated to Saint George. The tower and church thus offer two specific points of reference in the village, one architectural and one religious.

An old chapel dedicated to the Panagia lies a short distance from Lófos. According to local tradition, monks set out from there to build Mega Spilaio. The chapel was also probably built over an ancient temple. These two stories have different emphases: the monks’ departure is part of local tradition, while the connection with the temple is considered probable. The chapel is a place in the surrounding area, not in the village centre.

Local history across different periods

A local account lists Lófos (Βρώσθενα) in the 1690 Venetian cadastre of Vostitsa under the names “Βρεστενα” and “Βρώστενα” as a district of what was then Diakopto. For 1821, local historical accounts place Christodoulos Chalamis, a local notable and fighter, in Lófos. His son Andreas took part in the Assembly of Vostitsa in January of the same year; the connection to the assembly is therefore through the family.

Another historical reference leads to the Vouraikos Gorge: the local fighter Koumoutsos attacked Egyptians there in 1827. Together, the years 1690, 1821 and 1827 provide a chronological guide to the recorded place names and events. The settings differ: one account concerns Lófos and its former administrative affiliation, another concerns family history, and the 1827 episode took place in the gorge.

Festival date and geographical setting

The 16th Γιορτή Προβατίνας took place in Vrosthena Square on 26 July 2025 at 10 pm. It was organised by the association “Οι Φίλοι της Βρώσθενας”. Another edition is listed for 2026.

For regional orientation: Lófos is 22 kilometres from Diakopto, on the road towards Mega Spilaio and Kalavryta. This information combines distance and direction and helps you place the village when choosing a destination. The tower, local history, nearby chapel and specific festival date offer different points of interest. You can take these into account when choosing your accommodation and planning your days.
