Lefkasi can be explored through cultural details in the village and destinations in the surrounding landscape. The church of Agios Dimitrios and the Herōon are part of the village landscape; a forest surrounds the Monastery of Agios Athanasios, while a route leads to the summit of Profitis Ilias. The village lies two kilometres north of Filia and six kilometres south of Kleitoria. Filia is therefore the nearer reference point, while Kleitoria lies farther north. This orientation helps distinguish the village from the other named destinations before you decide whether you are more interested in local history, the forest or a summit.

Between the village and its surroundings

The Monastery of Agios Athanasios lies in the area between Lefkásio and Filia, in a forest of oaks, olive trees and kermes oaks. Its location distinguishes it from the church of Agios Dimitrios in the village: the monastery is part of the landscape between the two villages, while the church is a building in Lefkasi. This provides two separate geographical reference points for culture and landscape, rather than requiring you to look for both in the village. Filia is a useful landmark here: it marks the southern side of Lefkasi and is also part of the monastery’s location description. The three tree species give the forest landscape a distinct character; its position between two villages helps distinguish it from the village itself.

Forest or summit?

The two landscape experiences are also different. At the monastery, the focus is on the forest and its tree species; at Profitis Ilias, it is the elevation of a named summit. This contrast helps you classify the destinations by their features: the monastery lies in the area between villages, while the summit is reached by a 4x4 route. When choosing nature destinations, you can therefore distinguish between a forest landscape and a drive to a summit.

Profitis Ilias by 4x4

A route in Lefkásio leads by four-wheel drive vehicle (4x4) to the summit of Profitis Ilias. It lies at an elevation of 1,142 metres; a small chapel of the same name stands there. The combination of access method, elevation and chapel clearly defines the destination: it is a drive to a specific summit where a religious building stands. If you plan this drive, check current route conditions beforehand.

Church and memorial sites

Agios Dimitrios is one of the notable buildings in Lefkásio. A carved Byzantine double-headed eagle is located in the centre of the church interior. For architecture enthusiasts, the eagle is a precise feature: its motif, craftsmanship and position are all specifically described. This makes it possible to identify the church not only by its importance to Lefkásio but also by a distinctive detail inside.

The Herōon to the fallen stands at the entrance to Lefkásio from the direction of Filia. The 1821 monument honours local fighters in the Greek Revolution. The dedications have different emphases: the Herōon commemorates those who fell, while the monument honours the fighters of the Revolution specifically. They therefore offer different points of reference for understanding the area’s culture: a memorial site at an entrance whose location is clearly described, and a monument with a specific dedication. If you arrive from the direction of Filia, the location of the Herōon is also directly linked to your approach.
