Distinctive rocks, trails through the landscape, and recurring festivals are at the heart of Gavros. The lake beneath the so-called “Little Meteora,” various hiking destinations, and organized climbing areas give the village several different focal points. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the trails and landscape features from the festival dates: they offer different reasons to visit, and they are not all in the same place.

Rocky Landscape and Water

The rocks of Gavros have a distinctive jagged shape. Right-angled faults and the layering of the conglomerate rock give them their contours. Gavros Lake lies among wooded areas beneath the rocks of the so-called “Little Meteora” and serves as a landmark along the region’s hiking trails. The rock formations and the lake’s location therefore offer two distinct points of reference for understanding the landscape.

There are also small waterfalls and pools near Gavros, known as Kazanakia. Those interested in natural features will find these small bodies of water, with their own name, as well as the lake. The striking rock of Tzitzilopetra is another destination connected to Gavros by hiking trails.

Hiking and Climbing

Visitors can hike through the landscape along the rocks of Agios Dimitrios and Gavros. The organized trail network in the Gavros area is 17.5 kilometers long. Check local conditions before hiking. The network’s total length and the destinations of individual trails are different kinds of information: to choose a route, it helps to focus on the places you would like to reach along the way.

Southeast of the village, trails lead to the rocks of Nyfitsa and Platopetra. Other hiking trails connect Gavros with historic and natural sites such as Agios Dimitrios and the rock of Tzitzilopetra. These named destinations give the trails different points of reference. Gavros also has organized climbing areas. Hiking and climbing are therefore distinct ways to explore the landscape.

Festivals and a Break Outdoors

Every year in early June, the Annual Gathering of the People of Chasia takes place near the hermitage of Agios Theodosios. The recurring village festival in Gavros falls on August 15 and features live music and dancing. The dates fall at different times and have different locations: the Gathering takes place near the hermitage, while the village festival is held in Gavros. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, confirm the dates locally before you travel.

Near the hermitage there is a green space where visitors can picnic and relax. This offers a different way to experience the area from hiking to the named rocks. Conditions at the river vary; if the river is part of your plans, take this variability into account.
