The E2 circular route passes through Panormos; the distinctive Cycladic architecture of Pýrgos is reflected in marble decorations on houses, arches, paved lanes and flower-filled courtyards. Two neighboring museums offer further insight into marble art, while the E2 and E3 trails each have a different focus. This makes it possible to plan separately for museum and village details on the one hand, and hikes on the other.

Marble Art and Museums

The Giannoulis Halepas House Museum and the neighboring Museum of Tinian Artists together form a cultural site of particular importance. Authentic works of great value and the cultural heritage of the entire region define this place, where the museums preserve, present and showcase the cultural heritage.

The Giannoulis Halepas House Museum collection comprises 174 objects: clay and plaster sculptures, drawings, photographic and archival material, clothing and furniture. The large hall of the Museum of Tinian Artists contains 47 plaster models of marble works. The collections therefore have different emphases: one spans many types of objects, while the other focuses attention on marble works through a group of models.

The Museum of Marble Crafts organizes educational programs with games and activities for school classes and group visits. If you would like to include one of these programs in your plans, confirm its availability directly with the museum.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The E2 circular route starts in Pýrgos, passes the Museum of Marble Crafts and continues to the windmills of Pýrgos, which are in good condition. It returns to Pýrgos via Panormos, Rochari and Platia. The route described runs partly along a coastal road and partly along a stone path through a gorge; along the way, it offers a view of the settlement from above. The loop thus combines village and windmill highlights with different types of trail sections.

The E3 is one of the island’s longest trails. It passes through Pýrgos and descends to Akoumpistra, where there was once a coffeehouse for mine workers, before continuing to the Kyra-Xeni Monastery. While the E2 centers on a loop with a coastal road and a stone path through a gorge, the descent to Akoumpistra and the onward route to the monastery are key landmarks on the E3. Check current trail conditions before hiking, as they can change.

Panormos in the Context of Tinos

On Tinos, marble art is part of the island-wide cultural heritage: it was included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece in 2013 and in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. These listings add an explicitly regional perspective to the view of the local museums.

Ferries to Tinos run from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina; check schedules separately. On the island, the hiking network lists a private or rental vehicle, KTEL buses and taxis as ways to get around. Services and schedules may change, so compare connections in advance when planning your trip.
