On Kythnos, archaeological heritage, cultural sites and outdoor activities come together. To plan your trip, it helps to decide on your priorities first: Would you like to explore the island’s history, discover routes to historical sites, or focus on the thermal springs and activities on offer? The places and options below provide some concrete ideas.
Cultural history in Chora and beyond
The Archaeological Museum of Kythnos is housed in the former primary school building in Chora. Its exhibits span the period from prehistory to the present day. Finds on display include artefacts from the Mesolithic settlement of Maroulas, evidence of archaeometallurgy and objects from the ancient city of Vryokastro. The collection therefore covers both early settlement history and evidence of craft and urban life.
The Folklore Museum of Chora offers a different perspective: objects are displayed as a collection in a traditional house on the piazza. The two museums therefore differ not only in location but also in focus: the Archaeological Museum traces the island’s history, while the Folklore Museum brings together objects in a traditional house.
Other cultural and historical sites are spread across Kythnos. The Church of Agios Minas is in Dryopida and features a carved wooden iconostasis, an episcopal throne and an elaborately decorated epitaphios. Panagia Kanala is in the southeast of the island and is an important pilgrimage site in the Cyclades.
Hiking trails to castles and ancient sites
Kythnos has an extensive network of hiking trails. Possible destinations along the routes include beaches, archaeological sites and viewpoints. Route 1 heads towards Oria Castle and the ruins of its settlement. Route 6 heads towards Vryokastro and the ancient temples of Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite and Demeter. If you are choosing a route based on its historical focus, you can compare the settlement ruins at Oria with the temples at Vryokastro. Check trail markers and guidebooks locally before setting out, and take the condition of the trails into account.
As a guided activity, Ancient Trails runs from Episkopi Beach to Apokrousi Beach, passing the ancient site of Vryokastro. Medieval Trails starts above the settlement of Loutra and leads to a fork, where a western branch heads to Oria Castle. The route descriptions therefore focus on different things; confirm the details with the relevant provider in advance.
Thermal springs, a cave and water activities
Thermal springs flow into the sea in Loutra Bay. The Kakavos spring in Loutra reaches 52 degrees Celsius. If you are planning to bathe there, check the bathing conditions before your trip. Another special feature is Katafyki Cave, which consists of a large natural cave and artificial mining galleries.
The Kayak Kolona tour starts at Apokrousi Beach, goes to the ancient harbour of Vryokastro and Kolona Beach, and ends at the thermal springs. Confirm availability before your trip and ask about sea conditions. A local diving centre in the Loutra area also organises diving trips on Kythnos; here too, you should check availability in advance.
Getting there and finding your way around Merichas
Kythnos is connected by ferry to the ports of Piraeus, Lavrio, Andros, Ios, Kea (Tzia), Kimolos, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros and Folegandros. Routes and timetables can change, so check the schedule before departure. Merichas is the island’s main port. The marina there offers fuel, water, basic repairs, a bank, supermarkets, and several tavernas and cafés.
Courses and cuisine as highlights of your trip
Pottery classes take place in the centre of Chora. Participants are guided step by step and can take home handmade souvenirs at the end. Confirm availability before your trip. Village cooking classes are also offered on Kythnos: participants prepare dishes under guidance and then eat their own creations. Here too, it is best to check availability in advance.
