Karpathos offers several themes to explore: ancient history, nature observation and local cuisine. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first clarify your own priorities and then take the time required for individual activities into account. Pigadia, nature and traditional cuisine each give your trip a different focus.

Ancient sites in Pigadia

Ancient Potidaion, also known as Poseidion, stood at the site of present-day Pigadia. On Vounos Hill above Pigadia’s harbor are the surviving remains of a Hellenistic acropolis. This brings an ancient settlement and an acropolis at two distinct, clearly identified locations into focus. If you choose Karpathos for its history, you can consider both aspects: the settlement at the site of present-day Pigadia and the Hellenistic acropolis on the hill above the harbor.

Nature observation and biodiversity

The municipal birdwatching guide “Karpathos of birds” covers more than 200 bird species that can be observed, an ornithological map and 10+2 routes for nature lovers. It brings together an overview of species, a map and a choice of routes. In the North Karpathos–Saria region, 86 species classified as endemic, rare or endangered have been recorded. This lets you distinguish between an interest in birdwatching and a closer look at how these species are classified regionally. The guide focuses on bird species and routes; the 86 species refer to the North Karpathos–Saria region.

Plan for a long route

The Avlona–Tristomos–Vananda–Diafani route is considered particularly interesting and relatively difficult, involves swimming and takes approximately 7.5 hours. Its duration makes it a substantial time commitment: allow a large part of the day for it and weigh up the time required, the swimming involved and the difficulty together. Unlike the birdwatching guide, with its 10+2 routes, this is a single, precisely named route with an approximate duration. This distinction helps you separate a wide range of nature experiences from one specific, longer route.

Traditional pasta from Karpathos

Traditional pasta made from flour and water is part of Karpathos’s local cuisine. The dough is cut into pieces about 3 cm long, pressed in the middle and boiled. The pasta is then finished with butter and served with roasted onions. Its ingredients, indented shape and way of serving make this dish a specific culinary theme alongside archaeological and nature-related interests. If you also want to explore your destination through its local cuisine, you can include this tradition as a separate focus when planning your trip.

A cultural highlight in the Dodecanese

Within the broader destination of the Dodecanese, Olympos lies in northern Karpathos on rugged terrain facing the sea. The village has preserved its cultural identity thanks to its remoteness. This aspect complements Pigadia’s ancient heritage with a different perspective on culture: in Olympos, the focus is on the village and the preservation of its cultural identity.

For a short stay, the route’s approximate 7.5-hour duration is a significant time commitment. If it is one of your main interests, factor it into your stay before choosing your accommodation.
