Leros brings together a deeply indented coastline, a diverse underwater landscape and traces of different eras. The island may therefore appeal to visitors seeking both days by the water and cultural and historical discoveries. When choosing your accommodation, it helps to decide first whether the sea, diving and sailing, or the island’s architecture and history will play the larger part in your trip. This gives you a clear starting point for your search, without reducing Leros to a single theme.
Coast, Landscape and Time by the Water
The coastline of Leros is deeply indented with bays and natural harbours. It includes sheltered sea inlets as well as pebble and sandy beaches. Low mountains and plains shape the interior, with a narrow green central area in between. The coast and interior therefore offer different starting points for planning: you can focus on the formations along the water or also explore the landscape beyond the coast.
Below the water’s surface are extensive Posidonia meadows, colourful coral and underwater caves. Diving off Leros offers the chance to explore eight shipwrecks. In Agia Marina, an organised diving centre offers comprehensive training. Sailing offers a different focus: Leros has tranquil bays well suited to it. These activities differ in focus, although both centre on the sea.
Museums, Churches and Architectural History
The Archaeological Museum of Leros is housed in a neoclassical building dating from 1882 in Agia Marina. The finds on display illustrate the island’s history from prehistoric to Byzantine times. The collection therefore spans a period far broader than a single era. For trip planning, the museum offers a cultural counterpoint to the themes of the coast and diving.
The Castle of Panagia stands on Mount Apityki, also called Pityki, which is about 200 metres high. The Church of the Theotokos is located within the castle. Another older castle is the Castle of Lepida, also called Palaiokastro; it is considered the oldest surviving castle on Leros. Both names and structures point to the island’s history, although they do not refer to the same building.
The churches also differ in their architectural style and history. Agia Kioura in Partheni is a listed, single-nave church with a barrel vault, dating from the 18th century. It was built on the remains of an older place of worship. The Ministry of Culture has designated Agia Matrona-Kioura a protected monument and work of art; its frescoes were created by political exiles during the junta era. The details of their architectural styles, dates and frescoes give each of these places its own historical significance.
The Aerophone complex on Leros is considered a unique example of military architecture in Greece. It is also one of the few surviving Aerophone installations in Europe with 360-degree coverage. The outdoor area of the Leros War Museum is designed as a military museum park and displays decommissioned military vehicles, including trucks and armoured vehicles, as well as fighter aircraft. There are also six windmills dating from the 17th century on a hill. Porto Lagos on Leros is considered an example of Rationalist architecture. Together, these structures reflect very different historical and architectural themes.
Getting There, an Excursion and Choosing Your Accommodation
The flight from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Leros Airport takes one hour. Flight schedules and duration may change, so check the connection before booking. The cruise aboard the wooden fishing boat Agios Georgios departs from the small harbour of Agia Marina. Check in advance whether the trip is available on your travel dates. This lets you take arrival and possible activities into account when planning your trip, without assuming a fixed itinerary.
The cuisine is another part of island life: it uses fresh fish, local meat and herbs from the fields. Choose your focus according to your interests, without needing to assume a particular type of accommodation or facilities.
