The small coastal settlement of Kiparissos lies on the site of ancient Kainipolis; there are two beaches near Kiparissos. Its historical connections and coastline therefore offer two distinct focal points for planning a trip. If you are looking for a stay that can be framed in terms of both the area's history and the nearby coast, Kiparissos offers a clear starting point.

Kainipolis: history at the site of Kiparissos

The ancient city of Kainipolis stood on the site of the present-day settlement and was a religious center. It is described as the most important city of the Koinon of the Eleutherolakonians; its founding is attributed to the Tainarians. The area's history thus brings together several aspects: Kainipolis' religious role, its standing within the Koinon, and a specific attribution of its founding. Together, they give the ancient name a distinctive historical profile.

Kainipolis flourished during the Roman period, and this continued into the Byzantine period and the time of Justinian. This sequence is important for understanding its history: the Roman flourishing and its continuation into the Byzantine period belong to different stages of the same history. Kiparissos can therefore be understood not only through its founding history, but also through this span of time.

Early Christian basilicas and church sites

The account of Kainipolis mentions three Early Christian basilicas in connection with Professor Drandakis' 1958 excavations: Agios Petros, Agios Andreas, and Koimisi tis Theotokou. The basilicas are dated to the end of the 5th or the beginning of the 6th century. Their names and shared dating make the Early Christian period a distinct chapter alongside the history of the ancient city.

The histories of two church sites also draw on older religious sites. In Christian times, Koimisi tis Theotokou, also known as Monastiri, was built on the site of the Demeter Megaron; Agia Paraskevi was built on the site of the Temple of Aphrodite. Both references relate to the municipality's area. They reveal another historical layer: Christian churches followed older religious sites at these locations. Together with the basilicas, they extend the picture beyond the ancient city.

Beaches and directions

There are two beaches near Kiparissos. One of them is a pebble beach, located just beyond the archaeological site of ancient Kainipolis as you leave the area in the direction of Alika and Gerolimenas. Almyros, a fairly large beach with white pebbles, is nearby. The beach descriptions therefore emphasize different features: the beach near Kainipolis stands out for its surface and location, while Almyros is also notable for its size and white pebbles.

To reach Almyros, drive from Kiparissos in the direction of Gerolimenas and turn left at the sign pointing toward Ancient Kainipolis. From where you park, it is about a 200-meter walk to the beach. Check local conditions before following these directions.

This gives you specific points of comparison when choosing between history and the coast: Kainipolis shapes the area's historical context, while the beaches offer orientation through their locations and described features. The historical information ranges from the ancient city to the basilicas and the church sites within the municipality. Along the coast, you can use the pebble beach's location and the description of Almyros as guides.
