Zátouna combines a specific viewpoint with a rich local history. On Echtichova, the highest point in Zátouna and the first peak of Mount Voufagio, stands the Chapel of the Prophet Elias; from there, the panoramic view extends across the rugged landscape of Arcadia. The walk from the village to the chapel is a short stroll of about 45 minutes along a quiet, unpaved path. This makes it easy to include the viewpoint as a manageable part of your day’s plans. The time estimate is approximate; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Scenery between Mainalo and Arcadia

Zátouna lies in the transition zone between central Mainalo and its western foothills. The wider mountain landscape is characterized by rocky, mostly barren terrain and a succession of hard-to-reach gorges and ravines. A named viewpoint and the broader landscape thus offer different perspectives on the area: the chapel provides a panoramic view, while the mountain zone is defined by its rugged terrain.

Hiking trails with different routes

For planning hikes, the local hiking guide lists several routes around the village: two trails to Dimitsana, two circular routes near Goupató and Ágios Konstantínos, and two connections to Vλόγγος. These routes therefore offer different trail types and destinations. The two connections to Vλόγγος can be combined into a longer circular hike. A walk to the summit of Profitis Ilias is also recommended for its views of the surrounding area. When choosing, you can start by considering whether you are looking for a route to a destination, a circular trail, or a link-up you can combine with another route. Check current trail conditions when making your specific plans.

Theodorakis’ years in Zátouna

Mikis Theodorakis was brought to Zátouna in August 1968; his family joined him, and he stayed until October 1969. The themed route “In the Footsteps of Mikis Theodorakis” leads to places in Zátouna connected with his life and impressions of the region during his exile. The town’s biographical connection can thus be explored through both the timeline and a dedicated themed route. If you plan to follow this route, check access arrangements in advance.

Churches and architectural history

The churches also provide specific historical and architectural reference points. The Church of Saint George in Zátouna was built in 1843 and is a domed cross-in-square church. Panagia Elovitissa stands in the central square and was built in 1853. Zátouna’s parish church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The two dated churches were built ten years apart: for the Church of Saint George, the year of construction is accompanied by a description of its architectural style; for Panagia Elovitissa, by its location in the central square.

Economic development

Zátouna was destroyed at the end of the 18th century and subsequently recovered. Livestock farming, watermills, and, above all, tanning contributed to its recovery; the last tannery ceased operations in 1966. This sequence adds the town’s economic development to its architectural and biographical themes, linking a setback in the late 18th century with the later, precisely dated end of the tanning industry.

Choose the focus of your stay

When looking for a hotel in Zátouna, it helps to decide on your main focus first: would you like to concentrate on local history, or include viewpoints and hiking trails in your plans? Having a clear priority gives your trip a sense of direction, without requiring you to fit every theme into a single itinerary.
