Petra offers different perspectives on church art, cultural history and the coast. These themes are especially tangible in two churches, the “Stelios Pavlis” Cultural Centre in a former olive oil mill, and the beach on Lesbos’ northern coast. Choosing a destination based on your own interests makes it possible to weigh sacred architecture, historic buildings and beach amenities against one another.

Wall Paintings and Church Architecture

The walls of the Church of Saint Nicholas are covered with three layers of wall paintings. The oldest frescoes are attributed to the sanctuary area and date to the 16th century. The three layers bring the painted decoration to the fore, while the dating of the oldest frescoes also gives it a specific historical context.

Panagia Glykofilousa has a different focus. The stone church follows the design of a three-aisled basilica and stands on a 40-metre-high rock. It is reached by 114 steps carved into the rock. The term “three-aisled” classifies the church by its architectural form; “stone,” by contrast, refers to its building material. Compared with the Church of Saint Nicholas, with its three layers of paintings, the setting on the rock and the stepped approach shape the impression of Panagia Glykofilousa.

The churches can therefore be considered according to different interests: at the Church of Saint Nicholas, the focus is on layers of paintings and their dating; at Panagia Glykofilousa, on the basilica form and access up the rock.

Cultural History in Different Buildings

The “Stelios Pavlis” Cultural Centre is housed in the former Eleftheriadis olive oil mill, which is known for its industrial architecture. This brings a different architectural theme alongside sacred architecture: the building’s former industrial use.

At the Vareltzidaina Mansion, the Greek Ministry of Culture had the building restored in 1999–2000, adding a visitor area and a multimedia room for the public. The former industrial use of the olive oil mill and the restoration of the mansion offer different historical points of interest; the visitor rooms were part of the 1999–2000 project.

Beach and Coast

Petra Beach lies on the northern coast of the island of Lesbos. It has been awarded the Blue Flag. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available along the entire length of the beach; there is also a playground for younger visitors. The diving centre rents out sports equipment, and beach volleyball courts add to the active options. Sun loungers and umbrellas are therefore complemented by play and sports facilities that appeal to different interests.

A breakwater and a mooring for small boats are located close to the beach. They complement the beach facilities with coastal structures and maritime features. This brings the infrastructure for small boats into focus alongside beach activities.

Facilities and rental services may change. If you are counting on sun loungers, umbrellas, volleyball or rented sports equipment, check current availability before your visit.
