Lakones is a traditional hillside village in Corfu, known for views of one of the island’s most impressive sunsets. This sets two themes for choosing a place to stay: the village character and the evening views. There are also narrow, cobbled lanes, traditional houses, a Historical, Folklore and Photography Museum, and a hiking trail connecting Lakones with Paleokastritsa. When comparing accommodation in Corfu, you can consider Lakones as a distinct choice of location with a clearly defined architectural and landscape profile.

Hillside Setting and Lanes

The narrow, cobbled lanes, with their picturesque arches, invite you to take a stroll. They pass very old traditional Corfiot houses, most of which have distinctive cypress-green doors and windows. These details give a village walk its own focus: alongside sunset views, the lanes, arches and façades take centre stage. This lets you appreciate the landscape views and traditional village streetscape as two distinct aspects of Lakones.

Museum and Hiking Connection

The namesake Historical, Folklore and Photography Museum is housed in the building of the music association “Οι Λακωνίτες”. The museum explores history, folklore and photography. A hiking trail connects Lakones with Paleokastritsa. Unlike the lanes, which invite you to stroll through the village, this trail connects two named places. This lets you distinguish between a walk through Lakones and a hike to Paleokastritsa as different types of activity. If you plan to take the trail, check its current condition before setting out.

Beyond Lakones: Corfu

In the wider destination of Corfu, Corfu Old Town offers a distinct urban cultural setting. Its historic urban fabric has been almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Along with the two fortresses, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This differs in scale from the lanes and traditional houses of Lakones. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town contains more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis, created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. The museum was built primarily to display this pediment. In the historic centre, Casa Parlante also recreates the daily life of the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century, with animated figures and recreated furnishings and interiors. The Old Town therefore offers different cultural themes from the museum in Lakones, whose stated focus is history, folklore and photography.

The wider destination of Corfu also offers a distinct hiking context: in the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking.
