Two different themes in Acharavi

Two specific themes give a stay in Acharavi different points of focus: the Folklore Museum and its collection relating to Corfu, and the water sports offered by Acharavi Water Sports. One turns your attention to history and everyday life, the other to activities on the water. You can decide which to prioritise based on whether you are more interested in historical collections or water sports.

Folklore Museum: Corfu over three centuries

The Acharavi Folklore Museum displays objects, photographs, drawings and texts about Corfu from the past three centuries. The collection combines visual and written material with objects from everyday life and crafts. Its scope therefore extends beyond individual documents to include clothing, work tools and domestic rooms. These different types of objects offer several ways to explore Corfu’s history, rather than focusing on just one kind of exhibit.

The collection includes old photographs, books and documents dating from 1862, coins from the time of the Ionian State, and local costumes dating from 1800. There is also furniture from a traditional household, a loom, a traditional olive press, a carpenter’s workshop and a shoemaker’s workshop. A kitchen and bedroom, a laundry room, a water mill, agricultural tools and a religious section are also part of the collection. Domestic rooms, workshops and tools draw attention to living and working, while coins and costumes add further aspects of history to these themes.

Educational programmes, lectures and temporary exhibitions take place in the same building as the museum. If you are interested in one of these events, check the current schedule in advance.

Water sports on Acharavi Beach

Acharavi Water Sports offers banana boat rides, water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boats in Acharavi. The provider also advertises inflatable rides such as banana boats, sofas, ringos and dragons. The activities differ in format, ranging from rides on inflatables to water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boats.

Operations on Acharavi Beach may vary seasonally. So, if you are planning a particular activity, check before your trip whether it will be available during your travel dates.

Corfu: culture on a larger scale

In the wider destination of Corfu, Corfu Old Town offers another cultural and historical focus. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved, and its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town contains more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. Compared with the Acharavi Folklore Museum, its collections differ both in their geographical focus and in their thematic emphasis.

From Corfu Port, the Museum of Asian Art can be reached by bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before your trip.
