Vovoúsa offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: explore the village’s history and cobbled lanes, or follow trail descriptions toward Arkoudorema and Valia Kalda. The Church of Saint George and a water-powered nerotrivi—a fulling mill—provide specific cultural and historical points of interest for a visit. The Vovoúsa Forest is part of the Pindos National Forest. When deciding what to see, it is helpful to consider village walks and hiking trails separately. This will help you determine whether you are more interested in the village’s cultural heritage, the landscape, or the specific trail routes.

Village History and Cultural Heritage

In 1943, German troops burned Vovoúsa to the ground. The Church of Saint George was the only church to survive the destruction; it is an important monument in the village. This combination of a clearly identified historical turning point and a surviving church makes the building a notable point of reference for the village’s history. The nerotrivi adds a different dimension: Vovoúsa has a water-powered fulling mill. The term identifies it as a fulling mill; the qualifier “water-powered” describes how it is operated. Together, the church and mill offer different ways to understand the village—through a historical event and a craft-related technical feature.

Village Walk and Forest

A walk through Vovoúsa’s cobbled lanes is considered worthwhile. It focuses on the village itself and complements information about the church and fulling mill with an activity rooted in the place. The lane walk is therefore distinct from the two named hiking trail sections. Vovoúsa Forest is part of the Pindos National Forest. This brings two different scales into focus on the same trip: the lanes and buildings in the village, and the forest’s place within the national forest. When choosing Vovoúsa, you can weigh these cultural and landscape perspectives alongside one another rather than combining the places and trails into a single tour.

Comparing Hiking Trail Sections

In 2018, a 12-kilometer section of the trail from Vovoúsa to Arkoudorema was repaired and remarked as far as the core area of the Valia Kalda forest region. Also in 2018, a previously neglected trail section was repaired; it is 1.5 kilometers long. It ran from the mountain refuge in Vovoúsa to Papa Stream, then followed a mixed route of gravel road and trail to the confluences of the Aoos and Arkoudorema rivers and the western entrance to the Valia Kalda core area. The 12-kilometer distance describes the section’s length and direction; the 1.5-kilometer section is also described by its named waypoints and surface. Please check current trail conditions before setting out.
