The traditional square in Mytikas is defined by a historic plane tree and a stone fountain. The village is also connected to Arta via the Arta–Koronisia provincial road; the Arta municipal bus service’s Arta–Mytikas route also serves Mytikas. This makes it possible to distinguish the village’s local features from the other destinations in the broader destination of Arta. If you are planning to travel by bus, plan your journey according to the timetable for your travel day.

Square and Festival in Mytikas

A report by the local association records a festival on the village square on 25 July for the feast of Agia Paraskevi. It was linked to a gathering of Mytikas residents who live elsewhere; by 2016, the report had recorded 15 consecutive gatherings. If you would like to coordinate your stay with this date, check the specific event dates in advance.

Culture and History in the Broader Destination of Arta

In Arta, themes from different eras come together. The Historic Bridge of Arta is 142 metres long and 3.75 metres wide; it acquired its present form between 1602 and 1606. The Byzantine Castle lies on a hill in the northeastern part of the city and incorporates parts of the ancient fortifications of Amvrakia. It dates from the Middle Byzantine period, is considered a typical example of Byzantine fortification art, and bears witness to medieval Arta.

The Archaeological Museum of Arta also brings together several historical perspectives: it opened in 2009 near the Arachthos River and the Historic Bridge. Its permanent exhibition is divided into sections on public life, burial customs and private life. On 16 July 2024, the museum received certification as a certified museum, making it one of the first fully modernised state museums in Greece. The Small Theatre of Amvrakia was built between the late 4th and early 3rd centuries BC, during the reign of Pyrrhus.

Other cultural sites in Arta include Panagia Parigoritissa, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and one of the city’s most important monuments. It also holds a prominent place in the history of Byzantine art. The Faik Pasha Mosque, also known as Imaret, is one of the two surviving mosques in Arta, along with the Faizul Mosque.

Landscape in the Broader Destination of Arta

Peranthi Hill is Arta’s urban forest and is ideal for walking, running, cycling and exploring. The Tsoukalio Lagoon near Koronisia offers a different natural setting: the rare and endangered Dalmatian pelican lives there; approximately 35 pairs are reported, although the number varies by season. The Salaora Information Centre has an exhibition on the human and natural environment of the Amvrakikos Gulf, a relief map of the region, live images from the pelican colony and audiovisual information for visitors.

The Riverside Park on the Arachthos covers approximately 165,000 square metres and lies on the eastern outskirts of Arta, behind Krystalli Square and the central bus station. Its small lake ecosystem and thriving wetland offer opportunities for walking and recreation; fishing is prohibited. The different landscapes and activities provide a range of options for planning your visit to the broader destination of Arta, without confusing them with Mytikas’s local features.

Events and Other Places in Arta

The Arta Summer Festival is a festival featuring more than a hundred events, running from June to September. It is organised by the Municipality of Arta, local cultural associations and private organisers. Check the current programme for your travel dates. At the Sardine Festival, sardines are offered to the public free of charge, accompanied by traditional songs and dances and local food. It is also worth checking the current dates for this festival.

Koronisia is home to other distinct destinations in the broader destination of Arta: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin is a Middle Byzantine building dating from the late 10th century. The small, well-preserved Koulia Castle is in the southern part of the Koronisia settlement, on Koronisia Island, and is now used as an event venue.
