For a cultural stay, two geographically distinct themes can be distinguished in Koutso: events in the village and an archaeological site in the surrounding area. It lies between Koutso and Geniséa and is identified with ancient Bergepolis, a settlement of Abdera. By contrast, the flower exhibition and the cultural association’s events are associated with the village square or with houses and neighbourhoods in Koutso. If you want to put cultural traces into context, this distinction helps you avoid treating the village itself and its surroundings as one and the same.

The archaeological site near Koutso

The site between Koutso and Geniséa is fenced off and has been designated an archaeological site since 30 August 1979 (FEK 731/TB). If you are planning a visit, check access in advance before including the site as a definite stop on your itinerary.

Tombs dating from the end of the 3rd to the 4th century AD were uncovered in the site’s cemetery. Finds include 17 cist graves and a pithos containing a pair of gold earrings. The period provides the historical context; the number of graves and the individual find of the earrings make the evidence more concrete. Alongside the identification with ancient Bergepolis, there are also tangible details about the excavation there.

Village square, houses and neighbourhoods

In 2024, the second flower exhibition was held in the village square in Koutso on the feast day of the village’s patron saint. For 22 July 2022 at 9 pm, the cultural association “Agios Georgios” announced its “Traditional Festival”, described as an annual event, at the village square. The announcement described the festival as “annual”.

Another glimpse of village life comes from Holy Saturday, 16 April 2022: girls and women from the cultural association “Agios Georgios” sang Lazarus songs in the village’s houses and neighbourhoods, together with dance teacher Dimosthenis Kourtidis. This makes the locations mentioned clearly distinct: the flower exhibition and the announced festival were held at the village square, while the Lazarus songs took place in houses and neighbourhoods.

The timing is also important for your plans. The flower exhibition is documented for 2024; the festival and the Lazarus songs relate to specific dates in 2022. If you are travelling for an event, check current dates rather than treating the days mentioned as a current events calendar.

When choosing your destination, you can be guided by your cultural interests: the cemetery findings provide an archaeological connection to the site in the surrounding area, while the events in Koutso bring together various local settings. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction helps you take local cultural history into account in your decision without conflating the archaeological site with the village.
