Potos: Sandy beach, streets and harbor

In Potos, a very large sandy beach lies right next to the village. In the village, narrow streets lined with shops and snack bars become pedestrian areas; cars and motorcycles are restricted to a few streets. These are two distinct points to consider when choosing where to stay: the village’s location beside the beach and a streetscape where some narrow streets are reserved for pedestrians. If you are considering Potos as a place to stay, you can first think about whether the beach or the streets with shops and snack bars better match the character of the place you are looking for.

Along one section of the beach beside the picturesque harbor, there are cafés, bars, restaurants, ice cream parlors and nightclubs. These venues are located along a specific part of the beach; the pedestrian areas with shops and snack bars are a separate point of reference in the village. When planning, you can therefore distinguish whether you are mainly interested in the sandy beach, the narrow streets, or the stretch with venues by the harbor.

Thasos: Hiking trails and scenery

Thasos has numerous walking trails for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. One specific point of reference is the historic trail from Limenas: the route is 3.5 km long and passes through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. Route conditions can change, so you should check them before setting out on a hike. Another view of the landscape opens up from the 1,204 m summit of Ipsarion: from there, the view extends to the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach; visibility depends on the weather.

Thasos: Archaeology and history

The ancient Agora was the political, social, religious and economic center of ancient Thasos. The ancient theater of Thasos hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; program details may vary. In southeastern Thasos, the archaeological site of Aliki lies beside Aliki Beach. The site includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. The nearby beach and archaeological remains offer two distinct points of reference for the site: its coastal location and its ancient history.

Thasos: Museums and local products

For museum visits on Thasos, you can compare different collections. The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia houses 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artifacts from the Paleolithic period as well as the Roman and Byzantine eras. While one museum focuses on the works of Vagis, the other includes finds from widely separated historical periods.

Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. In Panagia, the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum is housed in a traditional olive press that operated from 1915 to 2007 and was subsequently converted into a working museum. The topic of olive oil thus also leads to the history of a former press. In Theologos, the Hatzigeorgis Mansion has been converted into a folklore museum. It includes everyday tools and implements, as well as a depiction of a traditional Thasian village house.
