Village Character and Kazavitiana

Mikros Prinos is one of the mountain villages on Thasos whose marble fountains run with flowing water. Mikro Kazaviti (Mikros Prinos) and Megalo Kazaviti (Megalos Prinos) are together considered the oldest and perhaps most beautiful traditional settlements on Thasos. The village has a theatre where summer folk festivals are held under the name “Kazavitiana”. Mikros Prinos is thus notable both for its traditional settlement character and for a named cultural event.

The Kazavitiana took place in Mikro Kazaviti on Saturday, 18 July 2026. A report dated 21 July 2026 described the festival as a cultural institution that has been organised there for more than 30 years.

When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether you are looking for Mikros Prinos for its village character or whether another island theme matters more to you. Across Thasos, hiking trails, archaeological sites and museums are among the other areas of interest.

Nature and Outdoor Activities on Thasos

Thasos has numerous walking paths for hikes of ecological and cultural interest, as well as trails for all ages and fitness levels. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. The 1,204-metre summit of Ipsarion offers views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach; visibility depends on the weather. You can take a hiking trail from the Kefalogourna waterfalls, although water levels may vary.

Those interested in other activities will find more options on Thasos: scuba diving is available near Pefkari, and boat trips from Thasos go to the island’s most remote beaches. Routes and operators may vary.

Archaeology and the History of the Island

The archaeological site of Aliki lies in southeastern Thasos, next to Aliki Beach. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. Marble was quarried and exported at Aliki’s ancient quarry from the Archaic period, through the Roman occupation, and into Byzantine times.

In Limenas, the 3.5-kilometre historic route from Limenas passes through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. The ancient agora was the political, social, religious and economic centre of ancient Thasos. Check trail conditions before visiting, as they may change. The ancient theatre of Thasos hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; specific programmes may vary.

Museums and Industrial History

The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artefacts from the Palaeolithic period as well as the Roman and Byzantine eras. The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia contains 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. Palataki offers another historical perspective: the building was constructed in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company that operated on Thasos until 1963.

History is also linked with everyday culture at the Hatzigeorgis Mansion in Theologos. It was converted into a folklore museum featuring everyday tools and equipment, as well as a depiction of a traditional Thasian village house. The examples on Thasos thus range from archaeological remains and collections to industrial and everyday history.
