Kalonyktis lies 15 kilometers southwest of Rethymno, on the 270-meter-high hill “Νικηφόρος.” This small, old settlement lies south of the old national road; Nikephoros Phokas is considered the village’s founder. The village is thus characterized by its elevation, its position in relation to the road, and a historical tradition.

Village profile: hill and founding tradition

The location details answer different orientation questions: the elevation identifies the site on the hill, while the distance and direction place Kalonyktis in relation to Rethymno. The wording is equally important to the village’s history: Nikephoros Phokas is considered its founder. This means the founding remains an attribution handed down through tradition, rather than being presented as an established fact. Geographical orientation and historical tradition stand side by side here, without stating the founding tradition more definitively than warranted.

A dated event in the village

On April 4 and 5, 2026, Kalonyktis was the start and finish location for the main race and cycling tour of the 11th Nikiforeios. The event lasted two days and was complemented by additional nature-related activities. This dated example connects the village with both the main race and a cycling tour.

Rethymno as a regional cultural setting

Rethymno’s Old Town offers its own focus on cultural history. It is designated as a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later modified during Ottoman rule. The historic center lies below the Venetian Fortezza fortress. The Old Town’s designated status, the later changes to its urban layout, and the center’s location in relation to the fortress can thus be viewed as distinct aspects of the city’s history.

Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the Fortezza’s main entrance. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period through Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno, by contrast, is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion; its permanent exhibition displays traditional crafts and folk art in five rooms. The two museums therefore have different focuses: the archaeological history of the prefecture on the one hand, and traditional crafts and folk art on the other.

Events also give the regional cultural program a seasonal dimension. The Rethymno Renaissance Festival takes place every summer, with music, theater, and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional event, and volunteers organize the parade every year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact event dates for your travel period.

Coast and city as distinct attractions

Rethymno Beach is another regional highlight: it is 12 kilometers long, starting at the historic city center and extending east to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown. For travel planning, this offers a contrast between the city’s cultural and historical attractions and its extensive coastline.
