Among Adele’s attractions are the Church of Agios Panteleimon and the house of Konstantinos Giamboudakis. A monument in Sarakina commemorates 18 residents of Adele who were executed by German forces. It is located outside the village. The church and house in the village thus stand in contrast to a memorial site with an explicitly historical connection.
Attractions and history in Adele
The two attractions in Adele have different thematic focuses: Agios Panteleimon is a church, while the house is associated with the name Konstantinos Giamboudakis. The monument in Sarakina broadens the perspective on the history of Adele’s residents. For planning purposes, location is an important distinction: the church and house are attractions in Adele, while the monument is outside the village.
Rethymno: Old town and museums
In the wider Rethymno destination, the old town offers a distinct historical focus. It is designated as a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later modified under Turkish rule. The historic center lies below the Venetian Fortezza fortress.
Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the Fortezza’s main entrance. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion. In five galleries, its permanent exhibition showcases traditional crafts and folk art.
The Chromonastiri Military Museum also connects local history with its exhibition themes: it is housed in a Venetian villa built in 1610 by the Clodio family. One room is devoted to the historic Battle of Crete; the museum also displays weapons dating from the Greek Revolution of 1821 to the Second World War. The settlement of Chromonastiri itself is designated as historic and worthy of preservation.
The museum at the archaeological site of Eleftherna is the first archaeological site museum in Crete. Its exhibitions trace life in ancient Eleftherna from the late millennia of the 4th millennium BC through the Byzantine period. The Late Minoan necropolis of Armeni offers a different perspective on archaeology: more than 220 tombs have been excavated there. The family tombs contained multiple deceased individuals; grave goods provide insights into art, religion and the social organization of the time.
The Arkadi Monastery is also part of the historic heritage of the Rethymno destination. Its two-aisled church of Saint Constantine and the Transfiguration of the Savior was built in 1587 and combines Venetian architecture with Renaissance elements. After the Revolution of 1866–1869, the monastery became a symbol of freedom.
Rethymno: Coast, landscape and activities
The coast of the municipality of Rethymno is characterized by a sandy beach that includes the Venetian harbor. Rethymno Beach is 12 kilometers long: it begins at the historic city center and stretches eastward to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown. These details describe the coast of Rethymno, not the attractions in Adele.
The gorges also differ in their described features. The Muloi Gorge includes a small river and the abandoned traditional village of Muloi, where traditional architecture, old churches and caves can be seen. It begins near Chromonastiri and ends at the village of Xiro Chorio. The Arkadi Gorge begins at Arkadi Monastery and passes through an impressive landscape to Pikri, which features significant elements of Venetian architecture. Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nest on the sandy beach in the Arkadi municipal district; systematic measures are carried out to protect them. Rethymno also offers opportunities for diving.
Events and local specialties in Rethymno
Recurring events offer different points of reference for planning your schedule: the Rethymno Renaissance Festival takes place every summer and includes music, theater and dance performances, as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional event; the parade is organized annually by volunteers. The municipal theater presents performances every year. If a specific event is important to your trip, check the dates. Rethymno also has traditional coffee houses serving local specialties.
