The Seli Ambelou windmill complex makes a striking introduction to Lasithi: it was designated a work of art in 1986 and is considered the largest windmill complex in Crete and Greece. Lasithi also offers folk art and historical collections, archaeological sites, caves and gorges, as well as experiences on the water. The variety of themes gives travellers the opportunity to shape their discoveries around their own interests.
Folk art, collections and Cretan traditions
The Folklore Museum of Agios Georgios is housed in a house dating from the beginning of the 20th century—the former school building—as well as in two newer buildings. Its collections include handicrafts, old books, weapons, paintings and wood carvings. The selection therefore ranges from handmade crafts to books and visual art; weapons are also part of the museum’s collection.
Lasinthos Eco Tourism Village offers a different approach to traditional themes, combined with a nature park. Its facilities include a zoo, working traditional workshops, a restaurant and traditional guesthouses. The interactive activities and attractions focus on reviving traditional Cretan art techniques. Food is also part of the offering: dishes are served in keeping with the Cretan diet, and many ingredients, such as olive oil, herbs, vegetables and fruit, are produced on site. Here, crafts and food culture stand out as distinct aspects of Cretan traditions.
Caves and gorges: practical details about the routes
Trapeza Cave, also known as Kronio, is an important archaeological and cultural monument of Crete. Its entrance can be reached after an approximately five-minute climb along an uphill, paved path with steps. The approximate time refers to the climb to the entrance.
Havgas Gorge is about four kilometres long; its lower section is relatively flat and accessible to everyone. The gorge is also part of the E4. Its length, the terrain in the lower section and its inclusion in the long-distance hiking route are separate points of reference that help describe the nature experience in Lasithi.
Archaeological sites and layers of history
The Palace of Zakros covers more than 8,000 square metres and lies at the exit of the famous Gorge of the Dead. It was an important harbour and a trading gateway to the East. The combination of the palace complex, the gorge exit and its historical role in trade makes the site a special destination for anyone interested in the region’s archaeological history.
Spinalonga also reveals several periods of history: under Venetian and Turkish rule, the island was a fortress; later, it served as a leper colony until the middle of the 20th century. Spinalonga is visited by boat. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check current boat services in advance.
The Diktaion Andron is associated with the myth that Rhea gave birth to Zeus there. This is a traditional account. A visit can also be understood as an encounter with a place where the cultural significance of a landscape connects with Greek mythology.
Activities on the water and practical information
At Koufonissi (Lefki), you can see submerged parts of ancient settlements while snorkelling. This experience differs from archaeological sites on land: underwater, parts of former settlements become the focus of exploration. As local conditions and providers can change, check the details before making plans.
Surfing is possible at Kato Zakros Beach; Kato Zakros is also accessible by bus. Check current bus services and local beach conditions for your trip. The port of Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi mainly receives cruise ships. As a port’s operations can change, it is worth checking the latest information on port operations if this is important to your plans.
