Theriso combines the history of the 1905 uprising with a clearly identified landscape on the way to the village: At that time, the village was the seat of the Cretan insurgents under Eleftherios Venizelos; on the way to Theriso, the six-kilometre-long “Eleftherios Venizelos” Gorge is traversed. This gives the village a specific cultural and historical focus, while the gorge adds a landscape perspective.
Theriso’s History in Two Periods
The Historical and Folklore Museum of Theriso is housed in the building that served as the headquarters of Eleftherios Venizelos and the Theriso movement in 1905. This brings two historical facts to life in one specific place: Theriso was the seat of the Cretan insurgents, and the former headquarters is now also the site of a museum. The history of the movement is therefore directly connected to the place.
A different period is the focus of the Museum of National Resistance in Theriso. It displays extensive photographic material on the National Resistance from 1941 to 1945. The two museums thus differ both in their historical focus and in their point of reference: the first is housed in a building associated with 1905, while the second focuses on photographs and the years 1941 to 1945.
Museums, Chapel and Gorge
Agios Georgios is also one of the attractions in the village of Theriso. Thus, two museums with different historical themes and a chapel are among the village’s named attractions. By contrast, the six-kilometre-long “Eleftherios Venizelos” Gorge lies on the way to Theriso and is traversed along the route. This is a useful distinction for orientation: the museums and chapel are located in the village, while the gorge is part of the way there.
Context within the wider destination of Chania
Within the wider destination of Chania, another urban cultural focus can be found in the city of Chania itself. The Old Town encompasses Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets and churches along historic streets. The Venetian Harbour was built in the 14th century for trade and was also intended to protect against pirate attacks. The Archaeological Museum of Chania displays archaeological evidence from the Chania regional unit spanning several centuries in its permanent exhibition: three rooms are on the ground floor and another is upstairs. Chania therefore offers its own combination of an old town, harbour architecture and archaeological collections—a cultural and historical focus distinct from Theriso’s history of the 1905 movement.
Within the wider destination of Chania, Akrotiri offers a distinctive natural focus, with small coves and beaches. In the northern hilly area, nature is largely undisturbed by human activity; the landscape features rich, partly endemic flora, as well as land and sea caves with endemic invertebrates.
