Stavros first draws attention with its beach: there are sun loungers, parasols, showers and a lifeguard service. Next to the beach is a small harbour with fishing boats. The area’s film history and Lera Cave nearby also add their own distinctive touches. Together, these features make the destination a blend of coastline, film history and a historical connection to Akrotiri.

Beach, Harbour and Getting There

Stavros beach facilities include sun loungers, parasols, showers and a lifeguard service. Beach facilities can change over time, so check the latest information before visiting. There are also tavernas and cafés at the beach, serving food and drinks. Individual businesses may change, so it is also a good idea to check the latest information before your trip.

Stavros beach can be reached by private vehicle or by Chania city’s public bus service. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off. The small, picturesque harbour with fishing boats is next to the beach and offers another local point of interest. The beach and harbour are different aspects of the same coastal landscape: beach facilities on one side, and the harbour with its fishing boats on the other.

Film History and Lera Cave

Stavros became known worldwide as a filming location for scenes from “Zorba the Greek.” This connection to film is part of the area’s cultural character and adds context to the beach setting without identifying an additional visitor attraction.

Lera Cave lies near Stavros, on the steep Vardia rock massif above Stavros beach on Akrotiri. It is named after Stefanos Leras, a Greek rebel and leader who was active in the Akrotiri area during the Greek Revolution of 1821 to 1833. While the film history relates to Stavros as a filming location, the cave’s name refers to a person and his historical activity in Akrotiri.

A steep, newly paved path above the beach leads to Lera Cave. As the path’s condition may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. Its location on the Vardia rock massif and the historical origin of its name make the cave a different point of interest from the beach and harbour; it is nearby, but is not part of the beach facilities.

More to Explore in the Wider Chania Destination

Those who also explore the wider destination of Chania will find its own landscape and cultural highlights. Akrotiri has small coves and beaches suitable for relaxation and tourism. In the northern hills of Akrotiri, nature remains largely undisturbed by human activity. The landscape has rich, partly endemic flora, as well as land and sea caves with endemic invertebrates.

For archaeology, the Archaeological Museum of Chania offers a different focus. Its permanent exhibition comprises three ground-floor galleries and one gallery upstairs, presenting archaeological evidence from the Chania regional unit spanning several centuries. In Chania’s Old Town, Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets and churches line the historic streets. The Venetian Harbour was built in the 14th century for trade and to protect against pirate raids. Chania’s Δημοτική αγορά is regarded by locals and visitors as a city landmark.

Theriso’s history is also part of the wider Chania destination. During the 1905 revolution under Eleftherios Venizelos, the historic village served as the headquarters of the Cretan rebels. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Theriso is housed in the former headquarters building of Venizelos and the Theriso Movement of 1905. The Eleftherios Venizelos Gorge, through which visitors reach the village, is 6 km long in total.

When choosing a destination, the highlights can be distinguished as follows: Stavros offers a beach and film connection, while the wider Chania destination adds city history, museum exhibits and landscapes.
