Epanomi offers several possible focal points for a stay: wine at the Gerovassiliou Winery, coastal spots on the gulf, the Fanari wetland, and early Christian and archaeological traces. When planning your trip, it helps to set a priority: would you like to focus on wine and craftsmanship, or are you mainly looking for the coast, birdlife or history? The places below bring this variety of themes to life and help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Winery, Wine Tastings and Craftsmanship
The Gerovassiliou Winery is located in Epanomi. A guided tour with a wine guide includes the vineyard, the production, bottling and aging areas, and the Wine Museum. The visit described thus includes several stops related to viticulture and processing. At the wine tastings, you can choose from current and rare older vintages, as well as carefully matched flavor combinations.
The Wine Museum features collections of tools from around the world associated with viticulture, winemaking, bottling and cooperage. The museum exhibits complement the areas highlighted on the tour: alongside the production steps, they also draw attention to the craftsmanship involved in wine. The tour, collection and tasting each emphasize different aspects of the same wine theme.
Coast and Nature
Potamos Beach near Epanomi has a wide sandy shore and a sunken ship that is considered a local landmark. Swimmers jump into the water from the wreck. The sandy beach and wreck give Potamos a distinctive coastal character.
The municipality lists Fanari, the beach on the Gulf of Epanomi, the Ageladáriko coast, KtĂma tou KaragiĂłz and the Mesimeri coast among Epanomi’s popular beaches. In addition to Potamos, you have other named coastal spots to choose from; Potamos is also characterized by its wide sandy beach and wreck.
The Fanari wetland in the Epanomi area covers 5,500 stremmata and serves as a refuge for migratory birds and other wildlife. It is rich in flora and fauna and is part of the European Union’s Natura 2000 program. For nature-minded travelers, birdlife, wildlife and habitats are distinct areas of interest here.
Early Christian and Archaeological Traces
The ruins of an early Christian three-aisled basilica were unearthed at Bgiadoudi, east of Limori Cemetery. “Three-aisled” refers to the division of a church interior into three aisles and thus describes the layout of the excavated building.
Archaeological finds from the Epanomi area also offer a glimpse into traces from different periods: 42 graves of various types were found there. The finds included vessels, jewelry and coins. These objects are dated to the period from the end of the 2nd century to the beginning of the 5th century.
Kritziana lies three kilometers south of Epanomi and was one of the four major metochia of the Monastery of Saint Anastasia. The historical references differ in nature: Bgiadoudi is associated with a church building, the finds concern graves and objects from the area, and Kritziana points to a historical connection with the monastery.
