Mariolata brings together early Christian architecture, traces of antiquity, and striking natural destinations. You can plan your stay around different interests: church architecture and historic sites in the village, or trails to the Lecanes and Baroutospilia. This lets you shape your days around cultural visits or a hike.
Churches, the Village, and Ancient Traces
The early Christian basilica in Mariolata is a three-aisled church with a transept and narthex, or entrance hall. Part of the mosaic floor in the central nave survives along the colonnades. The floor plan and mosaic floor are two distinct architectural features. Access is limited to the area around the basilica.
When approaching from the direction of Livadeia, the road to the left of the central square leads to the basilica after about 150 metres. This approximate distance can help you find your way; check local conditions before setting out.
A walk through Mariolata’s Old Village passes picturesque lanes and buildings, as well as a square, an old fountain, and the church “Η Γέννηση της Θεοτόκου”. Unlike the direct route to the basilica, this walk brings several features of the village together. It offers a distinct way to experience the village, while the basilica is defined primarily by its architecture and the surviving section of its mosaic floor.
The so-called Pelasgian Walls on Agios Athanasios hill in Mariolata formed part of the fortifications of the acropolis of the ancient city of “Βοιόν”. Here, the ancient defensive function takes centre stage, while the basilica’s church architecture presents a different historical theme.
Trails to the Lecanes and Baroutospilia
The Lecanes of Mariolata are intricately shaped hollows in the rock. They formed over centuries as ice and snow melted, and hold clear, cold water. Their shape, formation, and water make this natural destination very different from the village’s buildings.
One trail starts at the bridge in the village and climbs alongside the river towards its sources. The Lecanes are about 2.5 kilometres away. The route to Baroutospilia has a different point of reference: the hiking trail there is considered comfortable and easy to follow, and takes about an hour on foot. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
These two details help with different planning questions: an approximate distance is given for the route to the Lecanes, while a walking time is given for the trail to Baroutospilia. This lets you factor distance and time into your day plan separately.
Baroutospilia is considered one of the largest caves in Greece. From Baroutospilia, there are views towards the plain. Unlike the rock hollows of the Lecanes, here the focus is on the cave and the view across the landscape.
