Evritania is the mountainous region of the southern Pindus. Among its many attractions are the Velouchi ski resort, gorges and rivers, Lake Kremasta, and places with early Christian and more recent history. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by thinking about what you want your stay to focus on: winter sports, water activities, trails through the landscape or cultural discoveries.

Velouchi and trails in the mountains

The Velouchi ski resort has five lifts and 18 runs, including two snowboard runs, as well as four off-piste routes. It is 12 kilometres from Karpenisi. If winter sports are the main reason for your trip, these details offer a useful point of reference. As seasonal facilities may change, check current conditions before your visit.

Evritania also offers different perspectives on foot. Sections of the European long-distance path E4 pass through the region. These include routes to high peaks and shorter trails through gorges and forests, and across stone bridges. At Mavri Spilia, the via ferrata starts after a 20-minute walk along the marked M7 trail.

Gorges, rivers and Lake Kremasta

The Panta Vrechi Gorge between Roska and Doliana is considered a landmark of Evritania and a unique attraction that draws visitors from Greece and abroad. River trekking is possible in the gorge. You can drive to a certain point; after that, access is by river trekking. As road and river conditions can vary, check them before your trip. Canyoning is possible in the Halikorema area, and you can go rafting in Evritania on the Tavropos River.

The Kremasta Dam and the artificial lake of the same name lie where the rivers of Evritania converge. Visitors can take a water tour on the lake by canoe, boat or another small watercraft; confirm availability locally. Evritania’s nature routes include wetlands along the Agrafiotis, Tavropos and Karpenisiotis rivers, as well as at Lake Kremasta. The lake also features in the local cuisine: visitors can try wild or farmed trout from it. Availability depends on the season and operator.

Culture and history

The Cultural and Historical Centre of Evrytania uses 3D projections and offers a VR experience about the historic Battle of Kefalovryso, as well as a 360-degree video tour of the Episkopi Chapel. The centre also displays a replica of the mosaic from the early Christian Basilica of Agios Leonidis in Klavsi. As the installations may change over time, check which formats are currently on display before your visit.

History can also be found at specific sites beyond the centre. The Museum of the Greek Resistance is housed in the village school building in Koryschades, where the first National Assembly was held in May 1944. In Klafsi, the early Christian Temple of Saint Leonidis dates from the 5th century. The stone bridge of Agrafa is estimated to have been built in the 17th century. The Folklore Museum of Megalo Chorio is well worth a visit.

The Christian monasteries of Evritania that have survived to this day are considered important works of art and nationally significant pilgrimage sites. In the wider Evritania area lies the Monastery of Panagia Proussiotissa, a pilgrimage site visited by thousands of people from all over Greece. These places add a religious and artistic dimension to the region’s landscapes and activities.
