The modern city of Eretria stands on the foundations of one of the most important city-states of ancient Greece. This great maritime and trading power founded colonies as far away as Chalkidiki and southern Italy. The city and archaeological site form a single, connected whole: the ancient past is part of understanding the place today.

Ancient traces and city life

The streets of the modern city contain the ancient West Gate, the West Quarter, the Temple of Apollo Daphnephoros and the House of the Mosaics. The Agora and sanctuary also offer insight into different aspects of ancient Eretria. The Agora, at the center of the ancient city, was a focal point of economic and political life. The Sanctuary of Apollo Daphnephoros, in turn, was the most important place of worship for the Eretrians. Thus, a place of economic and political life and an important religious site stand side by side—two different ways of exploring the city's history.

The ancient theater: architecture and access

The ancient theater lies on the southern side of the city and dates to the 4th century BC. It was built on a naturally sloping hillside according to the traditional layout of Greek theaters, with a seating area, orchestra and stage. The seating area is carved into the rock and can accommodate about 6,300 spectators. The theater is also distinguished by its acoustics and architectural design. Important for planning your visit: it is not accessible due to its poor state of preservation. Check visiting conditions before your trip.

Walk and museum

An easy walk along Eretria's fortifications leads to the acropolis and follows a nature trail. This offers a different way to explore the site than focusing on the theater's architecture. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The permanent exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Eretria has been on display in its current form since 1991. It includes significant finds from excavations at ancient Eretria, Touba, Xiropoli near Lefkandi and Amarynthos. The collection spans the period from the Early Bronze Age to Roman rule. The museum therefore focuses on finds from several excavation sites and a long period of time. The Archaeological Museum is located on Ancient Theater Avenue and Isidos Street in Eretria; check the address before you travel.

Another chapter in the city's history

The modern city also boasts a rich architectural heritage from the 19th century. This focus differs from the ancient monuments and museum finds, turning attention to a more recent phase of the city's history. If you are considering Eretria for a culture-focused stay, you can think about whether this later cityscape, as well as its archaeological past, matches your interests.
