In Piraeus, different sides of the city come into view: a neoclassical theater, collections on maritime history and waterfront routes. When planning your visit, itâs worth combining these impressions with walks through the city center, a trip to the beach or a meal by the waterâwithout having to follow a set itinerary.
Maritime History and Theater
The Hellenic Maritime Museum offers two different perspectives on maritime history. Its permanent exhibition includes a model of the Hydra brig âArisâ and a collection of cannons from ships of that era. The museum also presents naval operations and Greek ships from the Balkan Wars through ship models, historical memorabilia and works of art. If youâre interested in history, you can view a specific ship model alongside a broader account of the navy and wartime events.
The ÎÎ·ÎŒÎżÏÎčÎșÏ ÎÎαÏÏÎż ΠΔÎčÏαÎčÎŹ (Piraeus Municipal Theatre) also reflects different chapters in its history. The neoclassical building was inaugurated on April 9, 1895. After a complete renovation, it reopened to the public on October 22, 2013. The two dates mark its original inauguration and its later reopening. Another theater venue in Piraeus is the Veakeio Theatre, which stands atop Kastella Hill.
Routes, Beach and Waterfront Life
The two routes described differ in length and course. The route along Piraiki is 2.5 km long and follows the peninsula by the water. The route through the city center covers 1.5 km from the port to the city center. This gives you a choice between a waterfront walk and a route between the port and downtown. The distances alone do not indicate how long the walks will take.
Freattyda has an organized beach with umbrellas, sun loungers and beach bars. These facilities may vary by season, so check the current situation before your visit. For a break by the water, Mikrolimano offers a different setting: a waterfront promenade lined with restaurants and cafés, where you can see moored boats and fishing boats.
There are also different options to consider when planning where to eat. Along Piraiki, youâll find traditional restaurants serving Greek cuisine, as well as fish tavernas, ouzeries and cafĂ©s. Individual establishments may change. The Mikrolimano waterfront promenade and the dining options along Piraiki are two distinct possibilities to consider, depending on the location and occasion you have in mind.
Sea Activities and Getting Around
Water sports in Piraeus include canoeing and kayaking, sailing, RIB boat trips, water skiing and windsurfing. Companies at Zea Marina and in Mikrolimano also offer organized sea experiences with experienced guides. As provider availability may change, check the specific options in advance. The activities listed encompass different ways to spend time on and by the water; this does not mean that every activity is suitable for everyone.
For a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, Metro Line 3 to Dimotiko Theatro station is one point of reference: the station is 800 m from the museum. As transport connections may change, check the current route for your visit. Taken together, the museum, theater, routes and waterfront spots offer different points of reference for choosing how to spend your time in Piraeus, without implying a particular order or a single combined walking route.
