The municipal area offers two very different themes: the Ellinikon Experience Park and the Pontian celebrations in Sourmena. The park combines nature, hands-on activities and learning experiences; the celebrations return each year during Easter week. This brings a versatile park and a cultural event with a clearly defined date side by side. For planning, the theme and timing are the key differences.

Ellinikon Experience Park: Nature, Play and Movement

Ellinikon Experience Park covers 75 acres. The grounds include around 900 trees, 80,000 plants and three squares. The area, planting and squares together define the setting. Along with the range of activities, they create a park whose character is not limited to a single attraction; nature and activities are equally central to the experience.

At the Water Maze, water, movement and light come together to create an experience for visitors of all ages. The playground, with its wooden structures, invites children to explore, learn and play; outdoor fitness equipment is suitable for every fitness level. The Zen Garden offers a quieter counterpoint, with water features and Mediterranean plants. In this way, activity-focused options, play and a peaceful garden area each offer a distinct focus.

The park is well suited to school trips because it combines nature with hands-on activities and learning experiences. It is more than just a collection of facilities: a connection with nature, hands-on exploration and learning together define its character, while individual offerings provide different points of focus.

Pontian Easter Tradition in Sourmena

In Sourmena, the Pontian Union of Sourmena holds five days of celebrations every year during Easter week. They culminate in a burial ritual at Sourmena Cemetery on the Sunday after Easter. The duration and the culmination give the event a clearly defined timeframe.

The ritual originates in historic Pontus and has been observed unchanged for more than a century. This continuity gives the celebration a historical dimension alongside its established place in the Easter calendar. The five-day Pan-Pontian Panoyr took place in Sourmena in April 2026; thousands of people from across Greece and abroad attended.

Choose Your Travel Occasion Based on Your Interests and Timing

When planning your trip, the main difference between the two is the first decision you make: for the park, choose based on the activities and areas that interest you; for the celebrations, the dates are fixed. The grounds combine movement, play and a quieter garden area. For the Pontian tradition, Easter week is key, with the ritual on the Sunday after Easter as the highlight. If you are planning your trip around the celebrations, check the specific festival dates before booking; for the park, choose according to the nature and activity options you are looking for.
