Salamina offers travelers a range of ways to spend their time, from archaeology and local everyday culture to nature and cuisine. Museums, archaeological sites and forests each give these themes their own character; there are also beaches and coves in the south and northwest of the island. You can tailor your stay to your own interests.

Archaeological sites and long stretches of history

The Archaeological Museum of Salamina presents finds in chronological order—from the Late Neolithic period through to Roman and early Christian times. This broad time span gives the collection a different focus from Kanakia, where the Mycenaean acropolis brought a palace complex and parts of a Mycenaean settlement to light. If you are interested in history, you can compare an overview of different eras with a specific settlement site.

The circular tomb monument near Kolones in southern Salamina enclosed three graves and dates to the 4th century BC. Near Peristeria on Salamina is the Cave of Euripides, with ten chambers.

Theater, windmills and everyday culture

The Euripides Theater was inaugurated in September 1993. Theater performances, concerts and other cultural events take place there. If you plan to attend a performance, check the specific dates in advance. Above the town stand two windmills, the only two of the ten originally on Salamina that have survived.

Faneromeni Monastery was rebuilt in the 17th century by Lampros Kanelos, also known as Saint Laurentios. Faneromeni Monastery is celebrated every year on August 23. The Museum of Folk Art and Culture displays local costumes from Salamina, furniture, looms, household items and tools from various trades, especially agriculture. If you are interested in clothing, home life and working culture, you will find a different focus here than in the archaeological collection.

Forests, coast and nature watching

Faneromeni Forest lies in the northwest and is suitable for running. In the south lies Kanakia Forest, which is suitable for day trips or excursions lasting several days. Visitors can watch animals and various bird species there; sightings vary by season. Beaches and coves can also be found in both the south and northwest of Salamina.

According to its official age assessment, the “Orsa” olive tree near Tutouliza in Kaki Vigla on Salamina is up to 2,530 years old.

Local food and when to visit

Traditional dishes from Salamina include Platetsi, Koygkoygkoyloyari, Moystokoyloyra, fried foods and bread baked in a wood-fired oven. The island’s cuisine adds a culinary focus to its archaeological and landscape attractions.

Two different reference points may be of interest when planning your trip: Faneromeni Monastery is celebrated every year on August 23, while animal and bird watching in Kanakia Forest varies by season.
