Aegina brings together traces of different eras and cultural trails whose distances and durations make it easy to compare them. Archaeological collections, old harbor facilities and trails on Mount Ellanio give your trip different focuses—from a museum visit to routes lasting several hours.
Museums and archaeological sites
The Archaeological Collection of Aphaia displays finds from the sanctuary of the local goddess Aphaia. These include architectural elements from the earlier temple, dating from 570–560 BC, and the later temple, dating from 500–490 BC, as well as plaster casts of figures from the pediments. Admission to the collection also includes a visit to the archaeological site of Aphaia. Ticket arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.
The Archaeological Museum of Kolona was founded in 1829 by Ioannis Kapodistrias and was Greece’s first National Archaeological Museum. Its collection spans from prehistoric times to late antiquity; most of the finds come from excavations on Kolona Hill. Evidence remains there of a prehistoric settlement, a sanctuary from the historical period, the acropolis of the ancient city and a Byzantine settlement. The archaeological site is especially known for its Temple of Apollo, dating from the 6th century BC. Admission to the Kolona Museum also includes a visit to the site; check the ticket arrangements in advance.
Harbors, sanctuaries and local history
Remains of the ancient commercial harbor are preserved in Aegina’s present-day tourist harbor. At the bay of Avra Beach, the ancient harbor complex also included a fortified naval harbor with ship sheds. Visibility underwater and access conditions may vary. The Temple of Aphaia, a world-famous historic archaeological monument, is located in northeastern Aegina. The Monastery of Saint Nektarios attracts thousands of pilgrims from Greece and abroad throughout the year.
Mount Ellanio also brings landscape and history together: at 532 meters, it is the highest mountain on Aegina. Specially signposted hiking trails cross the mountain. The Church of the Taxiarchs there dates from the 13th century. Travelers planning their trip around culture and archaeological sites will find a different focus from those who wish to spend more time on trails and scenery.
Cultural trails and planning your time
The listed routes range from 1.2 to 8.8 kilometers. The Paliachora Cultural Trail is 1.2 kilometers long and takes about 40 minutes. The Forest Cultural Trail is listed as 5.2 kilometers, including the return journey, and takes about four and a half hours on foot or one hour by bicycle. The Mount Ellanio Circuit covers 8.8 kilometers and takes about six hours. These time estimates help you gauge how much time to allow; conditions may affect the actual duration.
The “Cultural Trails” program brings nature, history and local production together on routes along unpaved roads and stone-paved paths. It supports the protection of cultural heritage. Check trail conditions and whether routes are being organized locally before setting out. It is also advisable to check local trail conditions before hiking on Mount Ellanio.
Markets, beaches and getting there
Daily markets selling fresh fish and local agricultural produce attract many visitors in the center of Aegina Town. Individual market arrangements may change. Facilities and infrastructure for recreation and sports for people with mobility disabilities or reduced mobility have been installed at Agia Marina, Vagia, A΄ Marathonas and Avra beaches. The municipal project was completed in January 2025. As facilities may be seasonal and require maintenance, check the conditions before your visit.
Ferry services connect Piraeus with Aegina. Depending on the service, the crossing takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes; check the timetable before your trip.
