Two distinct themes are available when planning a stay in Agia Paraskevi: hiking trails on Mount Hymettus and the Alekos Kontopoulos Museum. One takes you into the mountain landscape, the other into the former home and workplace of a painter and intellectual. You can begin your decision by considering whether you would like to focus on time outdoors or on art and biography.
Hiking Trails on Mount Hymettus
Four hiking trails on Mount Hymettus are numbered 11 to 14; together they cover 20 kilometers. One of the four trails starts at Gravias Park. The 20 kilometers refer to the combined length of these trails, not the distance of a single route. The trail number is therefore a useful reference point when choosing a specific route. Renovation of the four trails was completed by March 2018. If you are planning a hike, check the current trail conditions before setting out.
Gravias Park and Orientation
The park on Odos Gravias is located in Zone B of Mount Hymettus. During the parkās redesign, which the city reported on in 2017, a bilingual map of northern Mount Hymettus showing all the trails in the area and a sign with visitor information were installed. The map also brought together information on the mountainās history, fauna and flora, caves, and other features. The parkās design thus placed the trail overview in the broader context of nature and history.
Alekos Kontopoulos Museum
The Alekos Kontopoulos Museum is located in the former home and studio where the painter and intellectual Alekos Kontopoulos lived, found inspiration, and painted from 1964 to 1975. The museum site is therefore directly connected to a clearly defined period in his life and work. On display are paintings and drawings, personal belongings, rare archival photographs, and the painterās extensive library. The exhibition goes beyond a mere showcase of works, bringing together artworks with personal and written traces.
The museum offers informative guided tours for individuals and groups, as well as special tours for academic institutions. If you are planning a guided tour or a visit, confirm current dates and opening hours directly with the museum.
Cultural Program and Travel Dates
The cultural program also has a specific historical connection. In 2025, the municipal administration organized the āAgia Paraskevi_Ī Ļλη ΠολιĻιĻμοĻā festival for the second consecutive year. A concert in honor of Mikis Theodorakis was announced for the opening on August 29, 2025, at Agia Paraskevi Square. If an event is important for your travel dates, check the current event schedule.
For planning purposes, the cultural offerings differ above all in their timing: the museum offers a distinct theme through its collection and guided tours, while the festival example is tied to a specific date announced for 2025. You can therefore treat a museum visit and an event experience as separate priorities, rather than planning both around the same timing requirements.
