More than 140 acres of gardens, woodland and parkland shape Harewood, alongside Harewood House, a Grade I listed building, All Saints’ Church and the fully guided Emmerdale Village Set Tour. Landscape, local history and an active television set offer different focal points. To help choose a destination, consider whether you are looking primarily for nature, history or the television experience.
History on several scales
Harewood House is a Grade I listed building. The entire known history of Harewood, from Norman times to the present day, is reflected at All Saints’ Church. The church is still occasionally used for exhibitions commissioned by the Harewood House Trust.
Gawthorpe Hall offers a different historical connection: the manor house dates from the 13th century and was occupied by the Gascoigne family for more than 400 years. Today, a small part of the 2009 excavation project is visible. Here, a long local history meets the specific story of a house with family connections.
The Harewood Stupa in the Himalayan Garden also offers a cultural connection. Local craftspeople built it in 2004 together with Buddhist monks from the Kingdom of Bhutan. It offers a place for reflection; visitors are encouraged to walk around it three times in a clockwise direction.
Parkland, woodland and nature experiences
Harewood has more than 140 acres of gardens, woodland and parkland. At Lakeside Woodland Garden, the focus is on peaceful walks, beautiful views and opportunities to connect with nature. The landscape experience therefore ranges from different types of landscape to a garden specifically associated with walks and experiencing nature.
The Adventure Playscape offers children of all ages and abilities an accessible slide, sensory-rich low-level equipment and an accessible swing. Sylvascope offers a different focus: this immersive treehouse structure invites families to immerse themselves in nature, develop curiosity and learn through play.
Woodland Wonderland is part of the Three Parks Walk circuit. For the Nature Safari, pick up a Nature Safari Bag from Visitor Information in the Courtyard.
The Emmerdale Village Set Tour
The fully guided Emmerdale Village Set Tour takes visitors around an active, working television set within the Harewood Estate. Along the way, the route passes Bob’s Café, The Woolpack, the village church and rows of stone houses. Harewood is the pick-up and drop-off point for the Emmerdale Village Tours. Check in advance when the guided tour takes place.
This can help you weigh up whether you would rather focus on a guided set experience or on landscape experiences.
