Scalby offers several specific points of interest for planning your trip: a historic village centre, distinctive connections to the landscape and events held regularly. You can decide whether to focus on village history and buildings, the Cinder Track or the Scalby Fair.

Village Character and Architectural History

The Scalby Conservation Area was designated in 1979 for its special architectural or historic interest. The village centre has a traditional, closely built-up layout, complemented by many old trees and hedges. The road network also has historic roots: the current network was already in place at the time of the 1777 Inclosure Award. Apart from the Church of St Laurence, the oldest surviving buildings in Scalby date from the 18th century. These details provide different points of reference for the village’s history: the road network and the oldest surviving buildings.

High Mill Farm is another historic point of interest. The group of buildings is Grade II listed and includes an improved watermill from the early 19th century. The present mill building is thought to have been built around 1810. High Mill Farm was formerly known as Scalby High Mill. The approximate date refers to the present mill building; the former name adds another historic designation to the history of the property.

Landscape and the Cinder Track

Scalby Beck and its undeveloped banks form a distinctive divide between Newby and Scalby. The Sea-Cut Path offers a different connection to the landscape: from there, views north towards the village of Scalby form an important part of its landscape setting. The Beck as a divide between the two places and the views of the village therefore represent different aspects of the landscape.

The Cinder Track runs for 21 miles from Scarborough to Whitby. In Scalby, parts of the route run along public roads. The route and conditions may change, so check local conditions before setting out. There are six multi-part outdoor artworks between Scarborough and Scalby. While the distance given refers to the entire track, the artworks are located along this section. The installations may also change due to maintenance or later alterations.

Scalby Fair and Scalby Walk

The Scalby Fair is an annual week-long festival that culminates in a large village street fair. The street fair features more than 50 stalls, music, dancing and special attractions for children. The number of stalls and the programme may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to plan your trip around the Scalby Fair, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition in advance.

The Scalby Walk takes place every year on Easter Monday. Here too, dates and programme vary from year to year. For planning purposes, this recurring event is a different point of reference from the week-long Scalby Fair: before travelling, check which edition and programme are planned for your visit.
