Lealholm lies on the banks of the River Esk. A stay here offers several distinct perspectives: historic river crossings, a named walk between two railway stations, and the history of gardens, mills and memorials. You can choose your focus depending on whether you prefer walking, exploring the river’s history or admiring garden design.

River Crossings and Walk

The stepping stones and bridges mark historic crossing points on the River Esk, which have been used for trade and travel for centuries. Lealholm developed around a convenient crossing point just downstream from a deep and dangerous gorge. For generations, children have also used the stepping stones for recreation. These crossings therefore bring together two perspectives: their role in the history of settlement, trade and travel, and their use for recreation across generations.

The “Lealholm to Grosmont Walk” starts at Lealholm railway station and ends at Grosmont railway station. Its clearly named station endpoints make the walk a practical option for planning your trip. Fly fishing for salmon and brown trout is also possible in the River Esk at Lealholm. You will need permission from the landowners or the clubs with fishing rights; check the regulations in force locally in advance. Unlike a stay focused on Lealholm’s crossings and gardens, this walk ends at Grosmont station, bringing a second named place into your plans.

Gardens and Mill History

Poets Cottage Shrub Nursery lies on the banks of the River Esk in the centre of Lealholm, near the railway station and a public car park. Its designed gardens include specimen trees, shrubs, herbaceous borders, rock gardens, patio plants and planted troughs. The garden design may change over time; check the latest information about the gardens before visiting. In terms of choosing a theme, the nursery offers a horticultural focus alongside the history of the river and mills: the emphasis here is on the planted garden areas.

Lealholm’s mill history spans several periods: a corn mill was established in the 14th century, and its successor businesses operated until shortly after the Second World War. A paper mill also flourished in the 19th century. The history thus includes an early corn mill, its long succession of businesses and another type of mill in a different historical period.

Memorial and Fountains

Lealholm War Memorial was unveiled on 31 March 1920 and commemorates twelve local servicemen who fell in the First World War. It is designated a Grade II listed First World War memorial; later additions relate to the Second World War. The same memorial therefore allows you to distinguish its original dedication from the later additions.

The ornately designed drinking fountains were installed in the village in 1904. They were a gift from Sir Francis Ley, and each fountain bears an interlaced F-L monogram. The structure “Drinking Fountain to North of Lealholm Bridge” dates from 1904 and is designed in the Art Nouveau Baroque style.
