A trip to Hornsea can focus on nature, water activities or cultural history. Hornsea Mere lies west of Hornsea; the beach, a museum, a public art trail and historic architecture offer further highlights. This lets you choose the destination based on the themes that matter most for your stay.

Hornsea Mere and paths by the water

Hornsea Mere is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire, England. It is home to more than 250 bird species, including swans and kingfishers. Rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing are available at the Mere. Wildlife watching and various activities on the water offer different focuses for planning your trip.

The Trans Pennine Trail begins or ends near Hornsea Promenade. It is mapped and signposted throughout and is largely traffic-free. Many sections have gentle gradients and paved paths. If you are looking for a route with clear directions and these path features, you can consider the trail as a separate option. Hornsea Beach has Blue Flag status. Check the current award status before your visit, as it can change.

Museum, pottery history and architecture

Hornsea Museum comprises six buildings with nineteen exhibition areas. Hornsea Pottery offers a distinct connection to the history of pottery: brothers Colin and Desmond Rawson founded the pottery in 1949. The public art trail “Potter About Hornsea” celebrates Hornsea Pottery. The museum, the pottery’s founding story and its celebration through public art thus offer different cultural themes alongside one another.

Bettison's Folly adds a specific building to these themes. This Grade II listed building is a circular tower dating from the mid-19th century, built from rusticated, overfired bricks. Its form, materials and date offer a distinct way to explore Hornsea’s architectural history.

Animal encounters and activities

Bugtopia Hornsea is located in Hornsea Freeport. The Jungle Trail features animals, invertebrates, plants and other flora and fauna from around the world. The Animal Encounters are interactive educational sessions for all ages and last 15 to 30 minutes. Regular encounters may sometimes include the opportunity to handle animals; this depends on animal welfare and operational arrangements. Times, formats and displays may change, so check the operator’s latest information in advance.

Hornsea Golf Club also welcomes visitors, subject to availability. The club provides visitor information for weekdays and weekends. Check the applicable times and availability for your dates before planning your visit.

A culinary treat

Honeysuckle Farm makes fresh ice cream from the milk of its Jersey cows. You can try the ice cream at the café; takeaway tubs are also available. If you plan to sample some, check before your trip whether it is available.
