Leamington Spa combines a diverse spa history with museums, gardens and walking routes. At the Royal Pump Rooms, you can trace the town’s development from a small village into a thriving inland spa resort. There are also exhibitions on sporting history, gardens by the River Leam and walks with a range of route features. When planning your visit, consider whether local history, nature or a particular route should be the focus of your stay.

Spa history and sport at the museum

The mineral springs of Royal Leamington Spa have been known and valued since the Middle Ages. The Royal Pump Rooms building dates from 1814 and was originally built for spa treatments. Today it houses the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum; the Royal Pump Rooms are Grade II listed.

The exhibitions tell different chapters of the town’s history. On the ground floor, learn about the development of Leamington Priors from a small village into a thriving inland spa resort. The mezzanine focuses on sporting heritage, including Leamington’s role in the development of lawn tennis and the life of boxing world champion Randolph Turpin, known as the “Leamington Licker”. Local and sporting history come together under one roof.

Jephson Gardens and the River Leam

Jephson Gardens were first laid out in 1831 as informal walks along the River Leam and developed into formal gardens after 1846. Today, flower beds and a tropical glasshouse still define the gardens. Around 140 tree species add to the variety of planting; the gardens are Grade II listed.

A Sensory Garden adds a taste garden, a mirror arch and colourful planting to the site. Tropical and temperate plants grow in the glasshouse. There is also a goldfish pond and an observation beehive. The different sections of the gardens offer specific themes around which you can plan your visit.

Walks, nature and longer routes

Leam Valley Local Nature Reserve stretches along the River Leam. Riverside paths pass through habitats where dragonflies, damselflies and kingfishers can be found. Newbold Comyn offers a different landscape: this park of more than 120 hectares is intended for recreation, sport and nature experiences. Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre has a 33-metre swimming pool, a children’s leisure pool, the Pyramids fitness area and a café.

For a route between Royal Leamington Spa and Warwick, the Riverside Walk is one option. It is 3.5 miles long, follows the River Leam, the Grand Union Canal and the River Avon, and is completely flat. There is also a circular route through the town that can be completed in less than two hours. The sixth section of the Warwickshire Centenary Way starts in Royal Leamington Spa and heads south to the Burton Dassett Hills. The Lias Line, meanwhile, is a 23.5-mile route between Rugby and Leamington Spa; 65.3 percent of its route is traffic-free.

Cultural events and getting there

The Royal Spa Centre offers a year-round programme of theatre, comedy, film and live music. The Pump Room Gardens host the annual Peace Festival and Food and Drink Festival; the latter takes place in September. If one of the festivals is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates.

Direct train services from Leamington Spa station run to London Marylebone, Birmingham, Oxford and Coventry. When looking for accommodation in Leamington Spa, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on: museum and sporting history, gardens and nature, or a stay featuring selected routes. This lets you tailor your hotel search to the kind of trip you have in mind without combining the different activities into a fixed itinerary.
