Lydbury North lies in a valley amid the Shropshire Hills. The River Kemp flows through a significant part of the parish before joining the River Clun. Church history, mill construction and cycling routes offer different points of interest for a stay. The village’s history spans from an Anglo-Saxon church site to a 19th-century watermill.

Church History and Historic Buildings

The site of St Michael and All Angels dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. An entry in the Domesday Book confirms that a church existed here in 1086. The church also contains the old Roman Catholic Plowden Chapel, where Mass is still celebrated once a year. Lydbury North was designated a Conservation Area for its distinctive architectural and historic character.

Plowden Mill offers a different perspective on the village’s history: it is a watermill dating from the mid to late 19th century. Its machinery includes gears, shafts and two sets of millstones. The waterwheel is probably an overshot wheel. In this type of mill, water strikes the wheel from above; for Plowden Mill, however, this remains a probable rather than a certain classification. The ringwork lies 90 metres south-east of the mill and is designated a Scheduled Monument.

Landscape and Seasons

Walcot lies one kilometre south of the village of Lydbury North. The estate includes gardens, an arboretum and a deer park, and covers 180 hectares in total. This area refers to the entire estate, not just one of its components.

Events at Walcot Hall are another attraction. An annual Halloween Trail takes place in the arboretum. The annual Christmas Market also brings together local makers, artists and independent businesses, with offerings including handmade gifts and artisan-produced food. A one-day introductory blacksmithing course is aimed at beginners and is offered on various dates. Event dates vary from year to year. If a particular market, trail or course is important to your trip, check the latest dates in advance.

Cycling Routes and Practical Information

Two route details are useful for cyclists, and they describe different sections. Route 44 of the Six Castles Cycleway connects with the Jack Mytton Way near Lydbury North. Jack Mytton Way Route 5 reaches Lydbury North on the stretch from Plowden to Clun. Some sections of this route on main roads require particular caution. This helps distinguish the connection between the two routes from the section that reaches the village.

The Lydbury North Community Shop offers local shopping and post office services and is run entirely by volunteers. The historic Georgian inn, The Powis Arms, is in Lydbury North and offers bed and breakfast as well as a campsite. Seasonal food and local ales are also available. If you are considering staying there, check current availability; food and other services may also change.
