Sandwell offers a wide range of experiences for a stay: historic houses and collections, parks and birdwatching, cycle paths and sports facilities.
Parks, Paths and Birdwatching
At Sandwell Valley Country Park, you can go for walks, watch birds and enjoy sports. The RSPB Sandwell Valley nature reserve encompasses a variety of natural habitats and is home to a wide range of wildlife. It has paths, nature play activities and a visitor centre. In spring and summer, warblers and reed buntings nest by the lake; you can also spot lapwing chicks there. The season is therefore a useful guide if you are particularly interested in birdlife.
The paths in the RSPB nature reserve are suitable for pushchairs; they have no cattle grids, kissing gates or barriers. Dartmouth Park offers a different kind of park experience: it is a Grade II listed park with a play area, fishing ponds, flower displays, a sensory garden and a pavilion. Sandwell Valley Country Park and Dartmouth Park therefore offer different kinds of green space, without assuming that you have the same interests.
Forge Mill Farm also brings together several themes: it offers a farm trail, interactive activities, a play barn, a farm shop and educational programmes. The farm is home to rare-breed animals; an interactive educational tour explores animal welfare and where our food comes from. Facilities may change, so check what is currently available before your visit.
Half-timbered Houses, Museums and Collections
Oak House Museum is a half-timbered farmhouse dating from the late 16th century. Inside, it houses a significant collection of Jacobean furniture. The collections at Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery include paintings, toys and Ruskin pottery, as well as many other objects. The two places offer different ways to explore art and history: one through a historic house and its furnishings, the other through the breadth of a museum collection.
Haden Hill House is a late Victorian residence that now serves as a museum furnished in period style, set in a large park. Haden Hall, a restored Jacobean manor house, stands right next door and opens to the public several times a year. Check Haden Hall’s opening dates before your visit. Bromwich Hall, meanwhile, is a listed visitor attraction and one of the most significant surviving medieval half-timbered buildings in the Midlands.
Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre has a museum about the history of Sandwell Priory and the wider Sandwell Valley Estate. Visitors interested in the connection between a place and its past will find a dedicated focus on local history there. Mad O’Rourke’s World Famous Pie Factory is another of the area’s varied local attractions, known for its entertaining and quirky atmosphere shaped by heritage.
Industrial History and Landscape
Galton Valley Pumping Station is a late Victorian canal pumping station built to supply the Smethwick Locks. Volunteers open it one Saturday a month from April to October; admission is free. Opening arrangements may change, so check the dates in advance. This will help you plan a visit around its limited seasonal opening.
The Rowley Hills are the highest landform in the Black Country. At Blue Rock Quarry, the Rowley Hills reveal rock formed more than 300 million years ago. Sandwell Valley Country Park is also one of the Black Country Geopark sites in Sandwell. Alongside historic buildings, the region therefore offers landscape and geological history as distinct themes to explore.
Cycling, Transport and Sport
A traffic-free cycling route along the Birmingham Newline Canal runs from Wolverhampton through Tipton, Oldbury and Smethwick to Birmingham. Another traffic-free cycling link follows the Tame Valley Canal from Tamebridge through Hamstead to Birmingham. The places mentioned give you a clear guide to the routes; both end in Birmingham, but they start in different places.
For journey planning, Sandwell TravelWise offers public transport route planning, bus links to train and Metro stations, and cycling and walking routes. Sandwell Aquatics Centre has an Olympic-size 50-metre swimming pool, a 10-metre competition diving tower and a 25-metre diving pool. If you plan to visit, check the latest information on use.
