Montgomery combines a castle on a steep rocky outcrop with a compact history that can be explored through its museum, church and old walls. You can choose between different focuses when planning your visit: historic sites and exhibitions, a circular walk through parkland and farmland, or a cycling route with the option to extend it. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to discover culture or spend time outdoors.

Castle, Walls and Town History

Montgomery Castle was begun around 1223 on the orders of Henry III. The castle stands on a steep rocky outcrop above the town and offers views across the Welsh border. St Nicholas Church also has an early building history: construction began between 1223 and 1227. These dates place the castle and church in a similar historical period without implying that their building histories were the same.

Montgomery was originally a walled town with four gates. The town area within the remains of the old walls is designated as an outstanding Conservation Area. In the medieval centre is the Old Bell Museum, housed in a former pub. Its eleven exhibition rooms cover, among other subjects, Hen Domen, Montgomery Castle, Forden Workhouse and the town’s railway history. The Montgomery Life collection looks at the past 200 years and at how people in the town lived, worked and learned.

One of the notable historic details in St Nicholas Church is a medieval carved rood screen. It was brought there from Chirbury Abbey at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The St Nicholas's Stories project tells visitors about the church’s history. Another local tradition is The Robber's Grave: the long-standing legend tells of a man who was said to have been hanged unjustly.

Walking, Cycling and Events

The Offa's Dyke Circular offers a clear time estimate for a walk: the easy circular route is 4 miles or 6.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It passes through parkland and along quiet paths through farmland, partly following Offa's Dyke. A walk around Montgomery also takes in the Georgian Town Hall. Lymore Park, a 17th-century wildlife and landscape park, is near Montgomery’s car park.

If you are looking for a cycling option, you can include the Hendomen & Dolydd Hafren Cycle Route in your plans. It starts in the square in front of Montgomery Town Hall and can be extended to Dolydd Hafren Nature Reserve. The Town Hall also hosts musical, theatrical and historical events; individual programmes change. The annual Montgomery Show has a history dating back to 1895. Check the dates and programme if you would like to plan your visit around it.

Montgomery Market is held every Thursday and offers local produce and crafts. As market days can change, it is a good idea to check the current schedule before travelling. This helps you distinguish a market visit from other events at the Town Hall, rather than assuming they share an event.

Planning with Children and Getting There

For families, local information lists two trails with different age groups in mind: the Town of Little Cars Trail is suitable for children aged around four to seven, while the Historic Town Quiz Trail is aimed at seven- to 13-year-olds. Check the age guidance before your visit, as this information may change. At Montgomery Play Park, a path about 30 metres long with a gradient of 1:10 leads to a step-free wooden deck bridge, then continues along a paved path to the playing field. As access and facilities may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your visit.

Buses from Shrewsbury, Newtown and Welshpool stop at the upper end of Montgomery Market Square. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest services before setting off. You can then coordinate your journey with your chosen focus for the day, such as the circular walk with its stated duration, a museum visit or a trip to the market.
