Pencelli brings together historic buildings, a distinctive landscape setting and a paddling route that starts in the village. Pencelli Castle has been documented since 1215; alongside it, Castle Farm farmhouse and Castle Bridge reflect different aspects of building and canal history. Are you mainly interested in architectural history, the landscape, walking or cycling, or an activity on the water? Choosing a focus can also guide your search for a holiday rental in Pencelli.

Buildings with different historical associations

Castle Farm farmhouse is listed as a Grade II* building. Castle Bridge (Canal Bridge No. 152) is listed as a Grade II building; its listing dates to 17 December 1998. The bridge is also part of a group of original bridges on the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal.

For those interested in architectural history, these offer different starting points: the dated historical association of Pencelli Castle, the Grade II* status of the farmhouse and Castle Bridge’s place in the group of original canal bridges. This makes it possible to combine an interest in individual buildings with a specific connection to canal history.

Landscape and national park

St Meugan Church, also called Llanfeugan Church, stands on a secluded spur of land between two tributaries of the River Usk. Here, the immediate landscape setting takes centre stage, adding a specific geographical context to the building and canal connections. Pencelli is in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, also known as the Brecon Beacons National Park. If you are including walking or cycling in your travel plans, you can take the national park setting into account when choosing your destination; the historic buildings offer a different focus.

Paddling and outdoor education

The paddleboarding route from Pencelli to Talybont-on-Usk starts in Pencelli. Pencelli Slipway is the launch point. Ashford Tunnel can be reached via an additional 1 km paddling route. These details relate to different planning questions: the route gives the start and destination, the slipway the launch point, and the additional paddling route a further stretch with a specific length. This lets you distinguish the route’s stated destination from the additional stretch to the tunnel.

Plas Pencelli Outdoor Education Centre offers a separate educational option. It provides residential outdoor education courses for young people aged nine and over, through to adults. The accommodation is therefore part of a course offering focused on outdoor education. This differs from a self-planned trip, where you can make buildings, landscape or paddling your own priorities.

Getting there and accommodation

The B4558 provides a direct road connection from Brecon to Pencelli. Brecon is therefore a specific reference point for travelling by road. The two options represent different ways of shaping your stay in Pencelli.
