A medieval ship, recovered beam by beam from the riverside deposits of the River Usk: this find makes Newport’s history of discovery tangible. The Newport Medieval Ship was discovered in June 2002 and carefully excavated by archaeologists. In Newport, such traces of the past meet Roman sites, engineering works and expansive natural areas.

Roman History and Archaeological Finds

During the Roman Empire, Caerleon in Newport was an important military base. It was home to 5,000 soldiers and cavalrymen of the Second Augustan Legion. The National Roman Legion Museum shows what life was like at a remote outpost of the Roman Empire. The Caerleon Roman Baths also preserve the remains of the Natatio, a large outdoor swimming pool. An even, well-lit entrance and an on-site exhibition at the monument add to the visit.

The Newport Museum and Art Gallery offers another perspective on the city’s history. Since 1888, it has collected records of Newport’s history, culture and environment. Its exhibitions tell the story of the city from prehistory to the 20th century. Here, you can explore a broad sweep of time: from archaeological finds and Roman military history to later chapters in the city’s story.

The Newport Medieval Ship Centre is open during the 2026 visitor season from 27 March to 31 October. Admission is free and includes either a tour led by volunteers or an audio guide. Check visitor information before your trip.

Locks, Paths and Waterside Landmarks

Fourteen Locks is a scheduled ancient monument on the Crumlin Arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Newport. Completed in 1799, the flight of 14 locks raises the water level by 50 metres. These figures convey the scale of the structure; on site, its engineering history meets a landscape that can also be explored on foot.

At Fourteen Locks, you can walk along the canal towpath, watch wildlife and enjoy the surrounding countryside, including Allt-yr-Yn Nature Reserve. For a different route, Route 88 connects the city centre to Caerleon and the surrounding countryside via Malpas. It follows a mostly level riverside route. The Newport City to Sea Walk is an eight-kilometre section of the Wales Coast Path, opened in May 2012.

The Newport Transporter Bridge opened in 1906 and is one of only six operational transporter bridges remaining worldwide. It is closed to the public during extensive renovation work. Before visiting, check the official destination website rather than planning to visit the bridge as an accessible attraction.

Wetlands and Open Countryside

Newport Wetlands Nature Reserve covers more than 438 hectares, with reedbeds, lagoons, wet grassland and estuarine mudflats. You can explore the area on foot or by bicycle, and there is also a visitor centre. Level paths wind through the landscape. A wheelchair-accessible viewing platform and hides offer views of the reedbeds and main lagoons. The different habitats give your visit a focus distinct from museums and historic buildings.

Parkland, Market and Track Cycling

Tredegar House is a 17th-century red-brick mansion in Newport. Its parkland includes an ornamental lake, woodland and wide open spaces for visitors to explore. The grounds are open daily and free to enter; check the official website before your trip. This parkland adds space to enjoy the outdoors to Newport’s historical discoveries.

In the traditional covered Newport Market, beautifully restored, you’ll find independent traders and a lively food court. For track cycling, there is the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, one of five internationally recognised indoor velodromes in the UK. It hosts track cycling sessions for beginners as well as national and international competitions. Newport’s attractions therefore range from archaeological and architectural heritage to organised sport.
