The traces of Cyfarthfa Ironworks and mountain bike trails open year-round reveal two very different sides of Merthyr Tydfil. During your stay, you can choose between industrial heritage, Welsh-language cultural activities, steam train rides and a wooded limestone gorge.

Industrial history: ironworks, museum and workers’ cottage

At the beginning of the 19th century, Cyfarthfa Ironworks was the largest ironworks in the world. The surviving remains are among the most significant industrial monuments in Wales. The museum and art gallery at Cyfarthfa Castle showcase art, social history and remarkable objects, including the world’s first steam whistle. The Castle hosts exhibitions, talks and workshops throughout the year. As the programme may change, check in advance which activities are taking place during your visit.

The Penydarren Viewing Platform offers a different perspective: from there, you can look out over the original Penydarren Ironworks. The platform illustrates what the ironworks may have looked like and how it may have operated. Joseph Parry’s Ironworker’s Cottage, by contrast, turns the focus to home life and an individual story: the typical workers’ cottage was built in the 1820s for employees of Cyfarthfa Ironworks. In 1841, it became the birthplace of composer Joseph Parry. The upstairs exhibition rooms house an exhibition about his life and work. The subject thus ranges from the scale of the ironworks, through its possible appearance, to an individual life story.

Cultural activities and events

Theatr Soar is a Welsh-language cultural venue in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil. Performances take place there in an auditorium with 200 seats. Canolfan Soar also offers workshops in collaboration with various organisations. The activities offer different ways to engage with culture: performances sit alongside workshops developed with partner organisations.

Cyfarthfa Park is also a venue for County Borough events. These include the “Show of Shows” and the “Fireworks Skyshow”. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates in advance. This lets you make a specific event part of your plans without assuming that a particular programme will be taking place during your travel dates.

Mountain biking, steam trains and scenery

BikePark Wales offers a diverse selection of mountain bike trails open year-round, from beginner to expert level. The Brecon Mountain Railway offers something different: steam train rides from Pant, near Merthyr Tydfil, into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. This gives you a choice between an active cycling trip and a steam train ride; which one suits your stay better depends on the kind of experience you are looking for.

The nature reserve on the River Taf Fechan, north of Merthyr Tydfil, offers a scenic alternative. There, a 2.5-kilometre wooded limestone gorge lies between the bridges at Pontsarn and Cefn Coed. The area borders the eastern side of the Taff Trail. The gorge and the trail are therefore neighbouring, but distinct, points of reference in the landscape.

Pant and planning your trip

Pant is a shared point of reference for the train rides and the bus connection: local buses run from the bus station in Merthyr Tydfil town centre to Pant, and the steam train rides start there. Check the current bus timetable before travelling, as routes and frequency can change. When choosing your accommodation, you could first consider whether ironworks history, cultural activities, mountain bike trails or scenery is your main priority. These priorities give you a concrete starting point for finding a suitable hotel.
