For a stay in Bangor, you can choose different interests as your starting point: the history of the cathedral and Storiel, performances at Pontio, or trails and landscapes at Treborth Botanic Garden. These themes range from a religious site and regional history to performing arts and marked trails. When planning, consider which of these perspectives is most important to you.

Getting there and finding your way

TrawsCymru bus routes T2 and T10 stop directly outside Bangor railway station. This gives you a specific point of reference when planning your journey. As route information can change, check the connections again before you travel.

Garden landscapes and marked trails

Treborth Botanic Garden is on the shore of the Menai Strait. Its landscapes include native woodland, grassland, orchards and glasshouses. This brings together a variety of areas: open spaces, woodland and gardens with glasshouses. The four marked trails pass through the outdoor grounds and woodland. If you are particularly interested in landscapes and trails, you can make this variety a focus of your plans rather than reducing the garden to a single feature.

History, collections and performance

Bangor Cathedral stands on a site that has been used for Christian worship since the 6th century. The cathedral is also home to a rare 15th-century oak carving known as the Mostyn Christ. The long history of the place of worship and this individual medieval artwork offer two distinct historical points of reference.

Storiel’s collection covers every period of history from the surrounding region. The shop also stocks handcrafted products, including ceramics, jewellery, greeting cards and prints. At Storiel, regional history and craft are therefore presented as distinct aspects.

Pontio presents local and international performances spanning drama, music, dance and contemporary circus. Its programme offers a different cultural focus from a historical collection: here, the emphasis is on various forms of performing arts. If you plan to attend a performance, check the event dates before your trip.

Trails with different points of reference

The trails can also be distinguished by their respective points of reference. The Wales Coast Path passes through Parc Penrhyn; the Snowdonia Slate Trail starts in Bangor. For the first trail, the specific reference point is its route through Parc Penrhyn; for the second, it is the starting point in Bangor. Treborth Botanic Garden adds four marked trails through its outdoor grounds and woodland to this selection.

Views and architecture

Garth Pier is a Grade II listed structure and offers views across the Menai Strait towards Menai Bridge, Llandudno and the Isle of Anglesey. For finding your bearings by landscape and direction of view, it offers a different point of reference from gardens, collections and walking trails.

Penrhyn Castle offers a distinctive architectural and industrial-history perspective: it is an imaginative 19th-century building, constructed for a wealthy industrialist who owned a large slate quarry here. The building’s history therefore links the period in which it was built with slate quarrying. Along with the cathedral and Storiel, this perspective offers another way to explore the themes you can choose for your trip.
