St Winefride’s Well and Greenfield Valley Heritage Park offer two different ways to explore Holywell: pilgrimage history on one hand, and industrial history, monuments and wildlife on the other. There is also a museum, five circular walks, a heritage trail and a cycling route. This means you can explore Holywell through individual historic sites as well as through the park and its paths. To plan your trip, you can first sort these options by interest: religious heritage, architectural history, nature or outdoor activities.

Pilgrimage history around St Winefride’s Well

St Winefride’s Well has been a place of pilgrimage since at least 1115 and lies on the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way. This makes it possible to consider the subject on two scales: as the history of a single pilgrimage site and in the context of a named pilgrimage route. St Winefride’s Chapel dates from the late 15th century, adding a specific architectural period to the religious focus. Pilgrims still bathe in the outdoor pool at St Winefride’s Chapel and Well. If you plan to do this, please check the operating arrangements in advance.

Industrial history, nature and the museum

Greenfield Valley Heritage Park in Holywell covers 70 acres and has an industrial history. It is home to a number of ancient monuments designated as “Scheduled Ancient Monuments” and is also a refuge for wildlife. The park thus brings nature and industrial heritage together; the designated monuments provide an additional, specific focus for exploring its history. A free visitor centre offers information about industry, activities and walking paths.

Holywell Area Community Museum is dedicated to the history of Holywell and the surrounding areas. It expands the focus from individual named sites to local and regional history, while the Well and Chapel represent a more specific pilgrimage focus. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has a toilet and baby-changing facilities. As facilities may change, please check before you travel.

Circular walks, heritage trail and cycling route

A series of five circular walks starts in Holywell. The Holywell Heritage Trail starts on High Street. A cycling route runs through Greenfield Valley and connects Holywell Town with Greenfield. The options differ in format and starting point: the five circular walks offer loop routes, the trail has a specific starting point, and the cycling route connects two named places. You can first consider whether you would prefer a circular walk, a trail with a fixed starting point or a route by bike. Check route conditions before cycling, as they may change.

When choosing a hotel in Holywell, you can first decide what you want to focus on: should your stay be shaped more by pilgrimage and architectural history, or are you more interested in the park, industrial heritage, nature and walking paths? The museum complements both themes with a look at Holywell and the surrounding areas.
