Rhandirmwyn lies between striking upland areas and peaceful river meadows. The River Towy flows through the heart of the valley. Here, a distinct landscape setting meets named cultural and activity themes. St Barnabas' Church and Nantymwyn Mine appeal to different cultural interests; the Village Trails, a cycling route and Llyn Brianne add trails and activities around the reservoir to the range of options.

Church and mining

St Barnabas' Church in Rhandirmwyn was built in 1877 in the Early English Gothic style; J. L. Pearson designed it for Lord Cawdor. The term “Early English” identifies a particular branch of Gothic architecture and gives its architectural profile more definition than the general style label alone. For travellers interested in architecture, the construction date, style, architect and patron are concrete points of interest. Nantymwyn Mine offers a different subject: it is an upland lead mine about one kilometre north of Rhandirmwyn. The church and mine thus represent different aspects: a named church design and upland mining.

Trails and cycling route

The Rhandirmwyn Village Trails are easy routes exploring the river, country lanes and historic sites. The Big Wilderness Adventure cycling route follows the minor road through Rhandirmwyn and then loops around the Llyn Brianne reservoir. When choosing, you can distinguish between the themed trails and the cycling route with its specified course: one focuses on the river, roads and historic places, while the other passes through the village and continues around the lake.

A notice was issued by Carmarthenshire County Council on 17 June 2026 concerning public footpath 8/12 in Rhandirmwyn: a temporary prohibition of pedestrian traffic for up to six months was planned. Before using this path, check whether the prohibition is still in force.

At Llyn Brianne reservoir

Llyn Brianne lies almost 300 metres above sea level. From the car park with toilets by the lake, visitors can walk around the lake and through the NRW forest on the other side. The walk therefore takes in both the water and the forest opposite. In October 2019, Llyn Brianne was officially designated a Dark Sky Discovery Site. Alongside the scenery and walking opportunities, this designation gives the place a distinct connection to the night sky. The elevation and designation describe two different aspects of the reservoir: its height above sea level and its recognised Dark Sky status.
