Cardiff Castle brings together Roman, Norman and Victorian Gothic periods of construction and use on a historic site. But Cardiff can also be discovered through its museums, green spaces and waterside paths: along the way, you’ll encounter different aspects of Welsh history and culture.

History in Buildings and Everyday Life

At Cardiff Castle, you can see the exposed Roman wall, climb the medieval keep and explore the Wartime Shelters. Some areas may occasionally be closed; check the latest access information before your visit. The different periods represented on the site make the castle a special place to get a sense of Cardiff’s layered architectural history.

St Fagans National Museum of History takes a different approach, presenting Welsh history through people’s everyday lives. More than forty original buildings from different historical periods have been reconstructed across a 100-acre park. St Fagans Castle is also part of this historical experience: the listed Elizabethan manor house is designated Grade 1.

The National Museum Cardiff focuses on Wales’s national art, geology and natural history collections. The Evolution of Wales exhibitions span 4.6 billion years and include dinosaurs and woolly mammoths, among other things. As exhibitions may change, it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit.

Routes Between Green Spaces and Water

Cardiff Bay is a waterside area on a freshwater lake at the site of a former tidal harbour. At Cardiff Bay Barrage, a level, step-free embankment path is suitable for walking and cycling, with views of Cardiff Bay and the Severn Estuary. It’s a way to experience the waterside landscape on foot or by bike without losing sight of the area’s historical connections.

The Cardiff section of the Taff Trail starts in Cardiff Bay and follows the River Taff through several urban green spaces to Tongwynlais, near Castell Coch. The route is suitable for walking and cycling and passes local shops and cafés along the way. The wider Taff Trail stretches for over 55 miles between Cardiff and Brecon. Route types include riverside paths, former railway lines and forest roads; check current route information, as conditions and closures can change. The contrast between the urban Cardiff section and the longer route shows how the trail experience changes along its length.

Bute Park offers another way to experience Cardiff’s landscape. The 56-hectare urban park includes a historic landscape, urban woodland, an arboretum, landscaped gardens and a river corridor. Cadw’s Register of Landscapes lists it as a Grade 1 historic landscape of international importance. Self-guided routes, including the Woodland Explorer Trail, and a park map invite you to explore the grounds at your own pace. Information about visitor services may change; check the official details before travelling.

Culture and Practical Information

Wales Millennium Centre, in the heart of Cardiff Bay, is the national centre for the performing arts and world-class entertainment. Its programme includes musicals, opera, ballet, contemporary dance, exhibitions, workshops and tours. As the programme changes, the latest announcements are the best guide for planning your visit. Also in Cardiff Bay, Techniquest features more than 130 interactive exhibits covering science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Live science shows, a 360-degree planetarium and workshops in the KLA Lab add to the experience. The number and arrangement of exhibits, as well as programmes and dates, may change; check the official website and current calendar before visiting.

For local information, Cardiff Castle’s Visitor Centre has a Visitor Information Point. It provides city maps, as well as brochures and leaflets about local and regional attractions; visitor services and opening hours may change. Cardiff Bay railway station has step-free access from Bute Street and Lloyd George Avenue. The Millennium Centre and Senedd buildings are about a ten-minute walk from there. Walking time is approximate; check current rail information before travelling and allow for possible changes to path conditions.
